Really? I bet you also think A Modest Proposal was a bad idea too.

Can I just say I'm pleasantly surprised that, so far, nobody is defending the crowdfunding-to-stop-a-homeless-shelter program?

Well they haven't actually been arrested or anything, so there's not really much need for a lawyer yet.

San Francisco doesn't have the biggest of land masses, so I'm curious how vital choosing this site was.
It has very generous welfare programs, and the local government will tolerate a lot, including open drug use. And the weather is generally pretty good, so they don't really have to worry about freezing to death or anything.

Of Embarcadero specifically?

So, Embarcadero is prominently businesses, which were a significant benefactor to the pledge. Which is expected from them. There was legislation I remember passed in Honolulu that barred begging in Waikiki, the main tourist artery of the state, which highlights commercial incentive to block things like this. Honolulu is also known for enacting homelessness as a state of emergency, which allows for bypassing of bureaucratic red-tape, that normally applies to commercial settlements, in order to expedite shelter development.

In my town there is a shelter that is in the industrial district, with a homeless camp caddy-corner the dual high-way intersection in a commercial district in spite of the shelter itself.

I'm not going to defend it. I have a little sympathy with the people -- property crimes often do go up around these shelters, and sometimes you get people leaving excrement or used needles where your kids go. But I'm on your side in this one (yes, I marked it on my calendar). Crowd-fund some fences or something, hire some security guards, but don't stop someone else from helping folks who need it just because you don't want it in your neighborhood.

It occurs to me that people always seem to think that sexual broad-mindedness goes along with love and tolerance.

That's why there is so much of a debate over whether the sin of Sodom was primarily sexual, or about inhospitality, etc. But why do we assume that the two are not linked?

I think that San Francisco's culture of sexual permissiveness and its desire to keep out the poor perhaps go right together with one another. (Genesis 19:5, Ezekiel 16:49).

Let's also remember that California is the land of the NIMBY, with environmental and other laws often used as cudgels to keep "undesirables" from ruining the best neighborhoods.
