What Will Happen to the X-Men Film Series After Dark Phoenix?

Post by Winter »

While we're all wondering how Mutants will become part of the MCU now that Marvel FINALLY has the rights to them, along with the Fantastic 4, what will be the fate of the Fox X-Men series. Putting aside that the continuity of this series is so badly mangled that even Deadpool commented on it a few times now, what will happened to the series that many of us have grown up with?

It's been stated that Deadpool, as we know him, will remain as he is with his R Rating intact and I think Hugh Jackman has said that he would consider returning to play Wolverine again if he was given the chance to interact with Captain America.

Say what you will about the MCU but despite having 22 films and 11 TV shows the continuity has been rather stable and easy to follow while Fox's X-men could barely keep things consistent for 5 films. I mean every Wolverine film is in it's own universe with none of them tying into the Main series or each other. Deadpool is also in it's own little reality and despite supposedly being in the same continuity the X-men Trilogy and the First Class saga have so many continuity errors between them and that was before things got all timey wimey.

So will Marvel just completely reboot the series and start fresh or will they keep all the current actors, if they want to stay, acknowledge and integrate all the events of those movies into it's universe? I mean with Spider-Man and F4 working them into the story is pretty easy as they get their powers and fame the old fashion way, by accident.

But Mutants? There have been super powered people in the MCU for over a decade now and most, if not all of them, are generally well liked by people because they helped save the world several times over. And we now know that there are friendly aliens so the idea of Mutants being mistreated in the MCU to the extent that they are in the Fox Universe seems like a bit of a stretch.

So how will Marvel handle this and can they pull it off?

Pretty sure I've heard plans that someone near the top wants it rebooted. They're going to keep Deadpool and I think maybe something else too, but not sure what it could be off the top of my head.

Besides Deadpool it will be rebooted with new actors. But it's also still a few years away.

Because of the all-encompassing Mouse, my understanding is that they were basically told "finish these two projects you had underway, and then everyone gets throttled for more MCU" (said two projects being Dark Phoenix and New Mutants).

Honestly, I have mixed feelings. Aside from the usual "monopolies really aren't a good thing" comments people like to throw out, IMO one thing about the Fox X-Men movies I liked was that they were more experimental, at least in comparison to the mostly safe MCU movies. They had much lower lows, but they had some amazing successes in movies that I think would never be made under Disney's supervision. Hell, even the upcoming New Mutants is proposed as this weird horror movie.

As for how they're being worked into the MCU...I mean, we know that half the universe is going to suddenly pop back to life by the end of Endgame. You could probably work in the mutants into the MCU from there pretty naturally, I think.

I hope it keeps being it's own universe and it won't get preachy.

@Sir Will More reboots? Sigh...

I hope they simply let the property rest for a few years and come back with a reboot using completely new actors and learning from the flaws of the more recent films. Not using anything resembling the Phoenix plot so soon would be great.

Deadpool can stay and may break the fourth wall in order to reference events from the previous movies, which can also be construed as an alternate universe for laughs, or by making use of any other relevant explanations they come up with.

It cannot fit into the MCU as it currently exists - this is just a fact.

However... that is not to say that there are ways it could be incorporated as Marvel has a multiverse, it has a time travel, it has gods, its has the Infinity gauntlet. It can be done if they want it done, but realistically, I think the ONLY character that will be kept is Logan because he is the break out character and a firm fan favourite. Plus Hugh has stated that he would love to be in the MCU so no problem there.

I think the Fox universe has run its course tbh. The golden age was the first two films plus Old Man Logan. The fact that no one is really getting all that excited for Phoenix proves that.

I mean, nobody's excited for Phoenix because they did zero of the buildup towards doing the story properly (just like last time), and they aren't even going full cheese like Apocalypse did. It's not the Dark Phoenix story if you don't go full campy with the Shi'ar Empire and their stupid costumes. I know many people at least intrigued by New Mutants because it's doing something different.
