To be fair, that is not an unreasonable first assumption.

Nonetheless, I think it is a good idea not to jump to conclusions. There will be plenty of time to speculate about how this happened after more information comes out.

From the reports I've seen they were able to remove the relics, including The Crown of Thorns, as well as any artwork that wasn't nailed down.

Perhaps, but they literally think Islam is a religion of hate, founded on hatred.

Since they were doing renovations, I'm going to guess something involved with that was what caused the fire. It could have been any number of things from electrical shorts, to overheating of tools, to careless workers. I suppose it's possible this was some kind of intentional act, but I'm really doubting that.

One spark near dry timber is all it takes. The question is why there were no extinguishers on hand imo.

The “crown of thorns” relic and the “tunic of St. Louis” are “in a safe place”, according to Paris’s mayor.
About the cathedral’s stained glass: Reports that have come in over the last hour from independent sources describe ALL THREE OF THE ROSE WINDOWS AS HAVING SURVIVED. At least one of them, I believe the Rosace Ouest, may have to be taken out of the cathedral wall for its own safety as its surround may have been damaged. But anyway: if you heard earlier reports of any of these windows “blowing out in the fire”, those reports were apparently inaccurate.

My vote is to not use lead in the new roof. Also read that steel was in vogue for cathedral retrofits, though, considering the size of the building here, isn't aluminium better in the strength-to-weight department? And shinier?

Much more expensive, though. Pretty good-sized area to cover, too.

Yes, but this is the Catholic Church, which has more money than god at its disposal. I think they should go for titanium.

As I understand it, this is not true. The French Government is in ownership and financial responsibility for the Cathedral. A quick check online with multiple sources appears to confirm this, but I am not an expert.
