I have heard the cathedral has been damaged many times over the centuries and restored every time. I hope this pattern holds true this time as well.

Also the last I heard is that some old wiring in the cathedral was to blame. Possibly something intended to be replaced due to age.

On the materials for the roof. I would say steel for the supports. You are not going to really get stronger. For the rest I am not certain. But I am sure there are architects that would give a limb for the chance to work on such a project.

Still, this is history, and for all the wrong reasons. I can imagine tell people about this for years to come.
