I wonder how much of those upset with DIS would still feel if it retained the 60s sets and was more consistent with canon, but still had the exact same story and character outlines with the same strengths and weaknesses. I get the sense that because they bothered to modernize the look of the Prime universe at all that put those fans in too much of a bad attitude to be open to watching it on its own merits, with none of the “these uniforms are against canon!” type baggage.

I'd still be upset over the craptacular writing, so no dice.

I kinda wish the streaming interface was more conventional. No skip intro, no full-screen function by pressing f. It's like using mac developed software for the PC, and its shortkeys and interfaces make no sense.
..What mirror universe?

Enterprise, the Star Wars sequels and Red Dwarf all proved that you can update sets and still remain consistent with continuity - so I certainly find the updated sets argument to be full of holes and a bit too convenient.
Beyond that though, no, I would still dislike it because I dislike the politics, I dislike Burnham as a character, and dislike the new klingons, I dislike its interpretation of the Mirror universe, and I dislike the fact that this ship is more advanced than even the Enterprise E in some respects.

I think it would improve it with the 60s sets and more consistent feel to the canon. I'd still have general anxieties about the franchise though. Tbh, STD isn't the worst, despite some serious facepalm "WTF were they thinking?" moments. No, it's the uncertain future, and... I don't face it with much optimism. Star Trek IS a cash cow, and again, we've seen what happens at the start of a renaissance, and what happens when it crashes and burns. They really should have just rebooted the series ten years later, not four years later. That's still too damned soon. But then, people like Ron Moore said that, and they were artists, not corporate hacks. Of course, there's the fact they could so drive away traditional fans, that it just... doesn't belong to "us" anymore, but a new generation, and then it doesn't even look or feel the same. Insert a "Ash is still ten after 22 years" meme here, but yeah, that's how it went for me and Pokemon in my youth. I quit watching in 2011 and never went back. That's probably not the case for Star Trek at the moment, given their half-assed attempts to adhere to continuity, just patch it over, and most fans will accept it, but that could change in the future. Look at what Doctor Who became, and yet, I'd say it worked for that franchise - possibly. Still need to finish Classic Who before I catch up with New Who, and the missing episodes make that HELL, but anyway! I think it's less about STD for many people (except during the most dumbfuck moments) and is probably, just the same as me, overall anxiety about the future of this thing I love. And we all know those in charge have less than honorable motives.

Given the lacklustre response to Dr Who I would say it has worked better than std only just. Dr Who's problem is mediocrity but that is another discussion.

But yeah, Star Trek is no longer for traditional Trekkies. Which is hilarious as we were among the only ones watching it outside the Abramsverse. Trek unlike Wars has no mass market appeal and their attempts to change that have come up short.

Mass market appeal is being redefined because of all the competition for eyeballs. That is good for the brand, because those smallish numbers mean more and more.

The Enterprise's bridge was very consistent with the TOS bridge. Yet some fans were still disgruntled. That British guy on Trekyard was, as usual, mumbling his complaints about it. "Oh, there should be a carpet. Oh, the lighting is not right," and so on. There's no way to satisfy the purists.

As I have I said before, you only get one first impression. The end of season 2 was not the right time to even assume that they could.

Trekyards is so named because they are big on star ship design. To think they shouldn't comment on the things they dislike about a design is dumb. They gave big props to the overall design, to incorporating jellies and lighted squares, and getting the general feel correct. They pointed out that the increase in size makes the stations senseless (the curved controls make sense but then they put two chairs at the station, negating this), they point out that the lighting is a bit much, and then some personal foibles about some minor things.

To say that they were "disgruntled" for not loving it, well I guess it's true what they say "There's no way to satisfy the Discovery fanboys"
