The biggest missed opportunity was the one to make a good show.

If Kurtzman was going to go full fan-service with season 2, he might as well found a way to squeeze in William Shatner. Future time travelling Kirk, Mirror Universe Kirk, hallucination Kirk, multiverse Kirk, whatever.

As Shatner's 80-something and having a gratuitous Kirk cameo couldn't make the show any worse. And Shatner/Kirk's send-off couldn't be worse than in Generations.

If you make a huge mistake, do you try to repeat it during the worst 2 month strech of your life?

The biggest missed opportunity is that there isn't enough disco. Not discovery, no; they should've had long, flashing, LOUD segments that are nothing but Michael doing sick moves on the dance floor to bamboozle the Klingons into surrendering. Think Starlord's dance-off from Guardians of the Galaxy, but stretched out over a 10 episode season.

That way, EVERYONE would remember Discovery as Disco, instead of the (more unfortunate) shortened form of "STD."

They could have went all-in on Netflix and let the show be what it needed to be.

The way it went down just kinda shows how network television is cannibalizing itself. The network turns the screws on a show until the really passionate creatives leave, the network frames the entire marketing effort to try to "reach" a target demo, but when, as a result, the show isn't at all as-advertised, the blame is never assigned to the middle managers.

No, no, it's the production team's fault. It's the fans' fault. It's because the intellectual property doesn't actually have the market value the network estimated.

I mean, for Voyager and even Enterprise, sure, you could make a very good case that the problem existed between chair and keyboard in the writer's room, that they were too timid to make the show that television needed at the time.

Discovery on the other hand, wanted to be that show, and even still claims to be, but it's clear things would have been better straight-up with a free hand on Netflix without the terantogenic influence of a traditional network like CBS.

Yeah, actually trying to make people remember it as a literal disco wouldn't stop me from calling it STD, thanks. Even if they played the Bee Gees, and they're my favorite 1970s singer group. STAYIN' ALIVE FTW!
