Yesterday, the Star Trek Online mmo put out their "Rise of Discovery" update, the third and presumably final part of a piecemeal-released STD-themed expansion. The first part featured the player character fighting some Klingons and getting mauled by the silly space tardigrade, the second part featured the player character fighting Captain "Killy" of the Mirror Universe (which was one of the most enjoyable experiences in the game, considering what an unapologetic bitchy ham Mary Wiseman plays the character as), and now the third part features a woman dumb enough to tell her fiancee "I've got a location for our wedding" in her first cutscene, which is like, jesus lady, did you WANT the script gods to kill you?
The first half of the content update is fairly mediocre, with clunky and preachy writing and inept storytelling, but the second half has a legitimately satisfying emotional payoff, with excellent voice performances by Rekha Sharma and Jason Isaacs.
So...yeah.
Alex Kurtzman's STD is not even as enjoyable or emotionally satisfying as its own licensed game adaptation.
I wish I were surprised.

Holy shit. Then again, this is the same dude who worked on the Bayformers films. Are you surprised?

Re: STD shown up by their own licensed game
If it's update for Star Trek Online then it's not really licensed game for Discovery now is it. As MMO STO needs to bring in new content in order to keep interest of it's player base so this isn't surprising at all.

I mean, Bay gets a lot of hatred, deserved, but Orci and Kurtzman tend to be overlooked for what they've done alongside him.

STO is basically the Trek licensed game, across all the shows.
What I'm saying is that the MMO has better writing than the actual show. And a more entertaining villain in the form of Captain Killy and her open sadism.

To be fair STO tries to write well with what they have. And genuine tie ins they do better than most of their original story lines. But I might be biased.

I'm honestly not sure if the discovery updates are better or worse then victory is life. Really felt like they wasted an opportunity with bringing back most of the DS9 cast.
