People have made life or death decisions for a long time now, especially doctors. People still kill in self-defense or in the defense of another, which is this kind of situation. The law doesn't say anything about letting women die to save the unborn. The idea that providers will all go nuts worrying about this life or death decisions seems pretty silly to me.CmdrKing wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 10:04 pmYes, it does. Creating an environment in which the penalties for being wrong about "life of the mother" include a lifetime in prison, then healthcare providers will err on the side of letting them die. That is so predictable an outcome failing to acknowledge it is in bad faith. And if you're letting people die rather than provide abortions, you're elevating those fetuses above them.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 9:47 pm And the bill does not elevate a clump of cells over the woman, it just says she cannot kill it for her convenience.
Similarly, if you're forcing people of good moral character to choose between watching people suffer and die for preventable reasons, lifelong imprisonment, or walking away from the situation, you're engineering an environment to get as many people to walk away as possible. You can choose to read the evidence differently if you want, but it's not a slippery slope, it's looking at possible outcomes of the presented scenario and analyzing the most likely one.
Unless your argument is we can never predict any outcome of an event and must always refer to case studies or history or something. In which case hey, I don't wanna go get my citations out so whatever.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc, Yukaphile. People can still get divorces without no fault, but it can effect the distribution of the common property if no fault is not done.

I really don't understand that, but I have heard how getting a no-fault divorce was hell. It's a matter of civil rights to me, someone should be free to divorce if they want, who the fuck are we to be passing judgment?

What that means in practice is, under a fault-required divorce system, the one not filing for divorce can keep all the marital assets if fault can't be proved. So historically, this would mean that women seeking divorce had a choice between being cast out on the streets penniless (and most likely jobless and without any sources of credit thanks to how name changes and stuff work) or staying with their husbands.

Ocasio-Cortez tweets about how the bans are about upholding patriarchy:

It's still stupid, no judging people who divorce from moral religious crusaders
@BridgeConsoleMasher Technically, it kind of is.

I don't really think there is any technically or kind of about it. It's directly taking rights away from women. And that's just directly, how often do you think it might be used to keep people in abusive relationships. I mean it would be quite easy for a man to claim that his wife's miscarriage was actually an abortion, even if an actual investigation will show otherwise can she be sure of that? This is a major policy issue for the state GOP so they are likely to push prosecutors to investigate it.

No, it really isn't. This is something that scares me on the level of "what if same sex marriage gets outlawed again?"clearspira wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 6:57 amScared is an exaggeration surely.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:32 am Sources and sarcasm aside...this really depresses me. My mother and grandmother fought to defend women's rights to safe abortion. I am so, so scared that we're going back to this.

Yeah well your gut feeling isn't much of a reassurance or a comfort, so you'll excuse us if we explore the possible moral and healthcare ramifications the law achieving it's intended effect in a very conservative-court.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 9:21 pm And for some reason, I have the feeling that even this Supreme Court is going to vote in favour of Roe vs. Wade, if a decission is actually forced.
