Way I see it why bother doing at all if they are not going to do something different than just remake what was done before just with new art style. Think TMNT. Every TMNT cartoon has been different compared to 80's cartoon (that by the way was different compared to B&W comic book) and has brought something new to the table. Sure they could play safe and make series only for small group of existing fans but at end of day they want new fans so pleasing certain small vocal fanbase isn't viable to them.Admiral X wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2019 7:37 pm It always confuses me when someone decides they're going to do something with an old property, theoretically because the name recognition and built in fanbase would make it a safer bet than trying something new and original, except then they turn around and do their best to get rid of that built in fanbase.

In theory it's good business. Targeting 16-30 year olds builds a fanbase that will live a while, so you can sit back and relax while they buy all your merchandising crap, as opposed to chasing pathetic jobless 40somethings who only have ~20-30 years of value to extract for the shareholders. Two caveats:TGLS wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2019 7:40 pmThey say there's no such thing as bad publicity... --Kid's media reboots are typically done for the kids of today, not of yesterday, and are aimed at what executives or creators think the kids of today are into. That can have positive results (She-Ra, Dragon Prince), negative results (the Bayformers movies, really any reboot Bay touches), or neutral results (insert perfectly decent but widely controversial Transformers series after the original here). Point is, writing a She-Ra reboot for 40something neckbeards is not going to be worth shit. It's going to do terribly and get critically panned for being an out of date dinosaur of a show. Writing a She-Ra reboot for 7-10 yo girls and including competent enough writing that adults get a kick out of it? That gets a fanbase, rave reviews, and oh yeah A DECENT FUCKING SHOW TO WATCH (something the Suits rarely bother to give a fuck about because media execs are literally the worst people short of actual murdering dictators and serial killers).
--You still have to make a good show and market it well in today's saturated landscape. Want to know why STD has virtually no presence on fan social media and last I checked not even 2k fanfics on Ao3 whereas I can find that many fanfics about Supergirl fucking Lex Luthor's sister alone even if I exclude the weird futanari/omegaverse ones? Because STD sucks. It's alternately bland and incompetent, poorly written, shoddily directed, badly acted by the lead, incompetently produced, terribly shot, and frequently just plain grotty and mean. Alex Kurtzman is running up and down mainstream nerd media getting verbally fellated by interviewers who praise him as a genius for the slapdash bullshit that was STD season 2, and there's hardly any fan activity at all. Next to no art, cosplays, fanvids, fics, no nothing.
Meanwhile any Marvel movie, be it a fantastic one like Black Panther, a mediocre one like Captain Marvel, or a boring mean-spirited slog with a couple of decent set pieces and a mopey Captain America like Infinity War, will be memed, fanvidded, ficced, everything, up and down the fucking Internet. Even if it gets bad reviews, even if half the (independent) nerd media is against it and alternately raving about Teh SJWs or complaining that Disney brags about how socially aware it is when its Great Feminist Heroine movie is about Space Hillary having basically no character for 2/3 of the damn movie and makes no actual feminist points while simultaneously chasing the vanishing neoliberal moderate "middle ground" with such zeal that it forgets to give Space Hillary a damn thing to say oh and did I mention that there isn't enough Gemma Chan in this movie? There's not enough Gemma Chan in Captain Marvel.
ANYWAY. My point is, Marvel has likable characters, decent writing, and slick advertising plus easy availability. STD has unlikable characters, shit writing, and inept advertising plus it's paywalled behind a shitty subscription service that most people are leery of.

Two reasons, one it's mote likely to get executives on board because executives like things they've heard of, two if an adult is putting something on for their kid they're more likely to put on something they've heard of.Admiral X wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2019 7:37 pm It always confuses me when someone decides they're going to do something with an old property, theoretically because the name recognition and built in fanbase would make it a safer bet than trying something new and original, except then they turn around and do their best to get rid of that built in fanbase.

...dear Dionysus I really hope they don't axe this show after season 3. What Netflix did with One Day at a Time and Santa Clarita Diet really has me on edge. .___.

Netflix's business model increasingly looks like "get 3 short seasons, then kill it".Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2019 5:12 am ...dear Dionysus I really hope they don't axe this show after season 3. What Netflix did with One Day at a Time and Santa Clarita Diet really has me on edge. .___.
Welcome to the unchecked capitalist world of on-demand streaming. It's just as stupid and ruthless as regular TV, but with less regulation and instead of everything being ossified hulks it's a chaotic mess.

Re: She-Ra Season 2
The problem with reboots/remakes is that they can't seem to decide if they want to make something completely new or just more of the original. Successful reboots like Star Trek: The Next Generation Transformers: Beast Wars even The Legend of Korra find a balance between the old and the new.
She-ra seems to have found that balance. I saw the trailer and thought it was going to be like the transformers anime, a series that seemed to miss the point, but i watched the pilot to give it a chance and was immediately intrigued. The best part of MOTU was the world building and I was afraid they would throw most of it out, but i realized they were reinventing everything and i wanted to see how they were going to do it, kinda like what got me to watch Transformers Animated, another reboot that was very well done.
I was a little surprised that it was only seven episodes but i got to admit that a double cliff hanger isn't a bad way to end a season. I was hoping the whole 'Entrapta's alive' would be stretched out a little more, but i like how she becomes Hordak's new lab partner. I also think they did a better job with Imp, in the first season he is probably the only character who is worse then his original, but the second season is closer. Frosta's character development was a little out of left field but to be fair we only saw her when she was hosting the Princess Prom, and it was a great moment for Glimmer who suddenly gets to play big sister.

Next Gen wasn't a reboot, it was a sequel. Set almost 100 years later. Your comparison is off.

Re: She-Ra Season 2
Given the whole arc of the show, this is the season that feels like most like a classic RPG campaign. Which makes the fact they take an entire episode out to play D&D that much more awesome.

Re: She-Ra Season 2
I find it funny how both the Thrawn Trilogy & She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, (both of which I see as the Disney Sequel Trilogy done right) both feel like an RPG campaign. Zahn has said that he used the Star Wars RPG game to help build his story for TTT and I think Stevenson has said something similar when she was crafting She-Ra.
