I'd rather not copy and paste other people's words from a video and instead let them speak for themselves. - Spock's presence also being a part of its pro-diversity message.
- Anti-segregation stories that could be pretty on the nose in their directness.
- an actual social activist asking Nichelle Nichols to stay on the show.
- The interracial kiss of course, they knew it was a big deal and pushed for it.
- Chekov was also a deliberate attempt to give prominence to a non-antagonist Russian character that wasn't pcommon in media at the height of the cold war.
- Geordie in TNG and how Roddenberry really wanted the blind character as the pilot.
- how Data could sometimes be treated which could be allegorical to an extent of the struggke of minority individuals.
- Worf and his cross-cultural challenges.
- Both DS9 and VOY very deliberately wanted a black man and woman respectively as their leads, again, not happenstance.
- DS9, it should be mentioned, only having one Caucasian regular character. Something a lot of people tend to forget.

Could I have a source for Brooks being cast because he's black? I thought he was cast on merit and just happened to be black.MrL1992 wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 4:25 pmI'd rather not copy and paste other people's words from a video and instead let them speak for themselves. One of the best sources for this info is the 'Fifty-Year Mission...' Books By Edward Gross. Some of the most comprehensive chronicles and behind-the-scenes looks at any franchise I've ever read (or listened to on Audible in my case). Accounts come straight from the mouths of the writers, producers, avtors and other close sources to the production of Trek from TOS to the release of Beyond and Discovery's early stages.

Also, IMO, the left changed since TNG. It seems to me that it used to be about treating everyone the same, regardless of race or sex, and that now it no longer is.

That's because they adopted the Marxist ideology of oppressor vs. oppressed.

#1 problem has to be shallow corporate pandering attempts to check boxes instead of giving us actual diversity.
Remember the Big Special (white, straight, cis, except for the token black girl) Girl Power Shot from Avengers 4: Snoregame? There was ONE actual character in that shot, and she was shoved off to the side. All the other women in that shot were at best glorified extras to Endgame. Gwyneth Paltrow? Maybe 2 minutes of screentime. Scarlet witch? 2 minutes of screentime. Gamora? 3-4 minutes of screentime tops and she's not even the Gamora we know. Okoye? A minute tops. Valkyrie? A minute, maybe 2. Captain Marvel? 5 minutes tops and not a single line is personality building, there's just 2 or 3 generic quips, some plot dialogue, and then she punches Thanos a few times. She is literally just a fist to punch Thanos with.
Nebula was pretty great though.
But seriously, THAT is the genesis, I think, of a lot of strife. People get frustrated: "Who the fuck are these extras now? I just spent 2 and a half hours with Iron Man, Nebula, and Captain America, and two of them aren't in this Oh-So-Speshul shot and one of them barely gets to be in it, what the fuck is this?" Other people shoot back, "YOU'RE JUST SEXIST AND HATE WOMEN!" Jordan Peterson and his fellow crypto-Nazis go out and Gish gallop: "SEE? SEE? SJWS RUIN MOVIES! AND MEN! THEY HATE MEN AND WANT TO EMASCULATE US THEY ARE FEMINAZIS AND EVIL WAAARGLEBAAARGLE SMELL MY MANLY ARMPITS! WOMEN ARE INFERIOR AND DISNEY WANTS US TO BELIEVE THEY ARE STRONG WHICH IS UNCIVILIZED COMMUNIST NONSENSE!"
And from there it descends into mudslinging between aging neoliberal capitalist wannabe social justice warriors and creepy cyber-Nazis with youtube channels like Pewdiepie and Jordan Peterson.

I don't hear voices... I think that is disingenuous...

Only one caucasian character, but doesn't that get kinda void the more humanoid the characters get? Bajorans and especially Trills would never be thought twice of in a lot of modern day society. Odo also is not very representative of anything other than a white guy with white guy problems.
Thoughts?
..What mirror universe?

Oh they wanted a black lead, I remember that detail distinctly. Yes they were open to other ethnicities if by chance they couldn't find the right black actor but no, it was very much their intention with Sisko.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 5:18 pmCould I have a source for Brooks being cast because he's black?
