I just came out of an advance showing of this. I thought it was awesome. Really, really wish I had not known who a certain character actor was playing going into it because it was actually a nice reveal ... I heard gasps in my audience.
I think this version got Wonder Woman oh so very right where so many get her wrong. Look no further than the terrible unaired pilot Chuck reviewed. This Diana, as opposed to that Diana, is kind and loving as well as badass and Gal Gadot plays her so well. Playing Wonder Woman can be hard for the same reason playing Superman can be hard ... it's hard not to make the character boring, but she was just so earnest.
What did you guys think?

Re: Wonder Woman!!!!!
I've not seen it (and probably won't until it's on DVD -- I just hate the movie going experience so much), but I've heard good things about it, so I'm cautiously optimistic. It's good to see someone on this forum has seen it and given it a thumbs up.
I mean, after nearly every single DC movie since Snyder took over being horrible, they had to get one right eventually, yeah? Law of averages and infinite monkeys, right?
One thing that struck me when I viewed the trailers is that they could've gone a really interesting direction with Diana effectively coming from an Antiquity society and thus having a very different view of what warfare is like compared to the "modern" humans in the movie. In particular, I can see the modern folks being shocked by the up-and-personal brutality that is sword-and-shield war and Diana similarly horrified by the no-mans-land machine gun gauntlet.
"At least when I kill it's in honourable combat. I always see the eyes of the ones I slay. Your methods are so cold and impersonal. Where is the honor in a massacre at such a distance?"
I'm not holding my breath, but does the movie do anything like this?

Re: Wonder Woman!!!!!
My RPG group is heading to see it Saturday. So far the buzz has been good, looks like DC might have nailed down the first decent female superhero movie!
Thread ends here. Cut along dotted line.

Actually it does! There is a scene where she finds out this guy Trevor has hired for their mission is a sniper she's horrified by the idea of him killing people whose faces he never sees.ScreamingDoom wrote: "At least when I kill it's in honourable combat. Re: Wonder Woman!!!!!
I'm ridiculously delighted (and relieved) with how this turned out. Wonder Woman's maybe my second favourite comic book character, and in terms of stature as a hero figure definitely 'my hero' (no offence Shulkie, you understand), and that was just... I can't think of a movie that's so confidently captured the heart of a superhero and brought it to the big screen, outside of the original Superman, and the first Iron Man. And not taking anything away from Supes, but I can't just ignore the effect of modern effects and choreography on the action scenes, and the antagonists, while maybe not the most developed, had more going on than Iron Monger. I'm worried about jumping the gun since I've just seen my idol walking tall and kicking ass on the big screen and maybe I need time for that to settle into perspective, but I'm really tempted to call personal best superhero film of all time.
And it's been quite the dramatic shift looking forward now as opposed to a week ago - now I'm 'yeah Spider-Man looks like fun, and Thor looks pretty rockin', but Justice League will have Wonder Woman in it'.

Re: Wonder Woman!!!!!
I saw this movie on Saturday. And I quite enjoyed it. It was pretty much everything I want in a super hero movie.
My favorite part by far was when Wonder Woman decided to charge No Man's Land. It was the first big reveal of her outfit, which we'd seen in Batman v Superman, but this was the first good look at it in this film. And it was worth the wait.
Overall, I don't think the movie is quite up to the standard I've come to expect from Marvel over the past few years, but this was definitely a big improvement over DC's movies from last year.

Re: Wonder Woman!!!!!
I had resigned myself to not seeing any movie this year (well maybe Star Wars in December) because nothing looked at all appealing to me. I'm a big fan of Alien and Aliens but I have less than zero interest in Prometheus 2 (Covenant) and I'm really starting to tire of superhero movies in general. But, after hearing about this flick, I may hafta go see it.
Re: Wonder Woman!!!!!
I saw it Friday and enjoyed it. I feel the special effects were a bit weak, again with the muted colors (like the only things fully saturated are the lasso and a peacock colored dress), the ending was a tad weak (very computer game fight-y), and it did feel weirdly Captain America-ish after we got to the war itself (which is a niggle at best). All that said, Wonder Woman is a hero. Steve Trevor is a hero. They do heroic things and there actually is a proper story throughout. So well done DC, you have a good superhero movie. Dr. Poison was fun and while it varied the Wonder Woman origin it didn't just go off in some weird direction.
We must dissent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwqN3Ur ... l=matsku84
Re: Wonder Woman!!!!!
I pretty much agree with Robovski. The effects were a bit weak, and the slow mo got kinda old but it mostly worked in for the movie's comic book style.
and like BunBun299 said, the stand out moment was Wonder Woman decided to charge across no-man's land. Not just because it was an awesome action scene, but because it was a truly heroic act. Not only were Steve Trevor's comments before about "not being able to save them all" correct, but Diana's compassion and need to help people was what was driving her and was also valid.
Facing off against the machine gun turrets and leading the charge with Trevor and co behind is just the sort of inspiring comic book hero action I love to see.
All before that the chemistry and banter between Steve Trevor and Diana was great. in Themyscira, the boat and London, with both getting to be the fish out of water respectively, what could have been cliched was charming and endearing.
Do agree the final act let it down. It was the cliched DC superhero movie ending once more.
Also, personal grumble. The movie pushes forward the innacurate pop-culture view of WW1 popularised by shows such as Blackadder goes Forth. Trench warfare was over by this part of the war after the German spring offensive and breakout. At this point we were deep in the 100 days offensive prior to the armistice with the German army largely being routed.
What's more, many British generals were killed in action, serving from the front lines. The British army as "Lions lead by Donkey's" is a myth. The BBC has a great article on it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zq2y87h
