I admit, this makes me queasy...

My dad plopped me down in front of Childs Play when I was like 4... Not sure if that had anything to do with it, but yeah I kinda lean that way.

In the interest of precision, here’s another article on this case.
MEDICALLY speaking she was denied active euthanasia and merely given appropriate palliative care once she’d made clear she was determined to starve herself.

There’s... a lot to be said about the details of the story beyond that, but it is important given the nature of the topic to be clear on the precise chain of events.

Ok, now that it turns out that the initial story was misreported, I feel a LOT LESS queasy.

VSED is still an extremely tragic end for a 17 year old, of course. I doubt anyone is happy about this. But it's not in the same league as giving a 17 year old a lethal cocktail.

Thanks for digging that up. I'm glad that my initial feeling about the validity of the story was right. And it's not just the english speaking media that reported it the wrong way, german journalism wasn't better either. Sigh... If only the journalists would learn not to work so hard to give credence to the fake news meme and remember their actual purpose in a society...

Yeah, while I think society would be well served to deal more maturely with affording people the right to die, extending this to minors is a... daunting prospect to say the least. You could probably make the case that there's not a good dividing line between the two, but even then I think it's reasonable practice to put actual barriers between minors and dramatically life-altering medical services.

In this instance they probably walked the tightrope as best they could on the medical side. Without access to the original sources for Pothoven's case it's impossible to speak with full certainty, but the implication certainly is that she went through a pretty hefty bevy of psychological treatment without much improvement, and the state refused her parent's rather desperate and concerning request for electroshock. At that point the compromise option of simply respecting her own determination to die rather than actively helping her in the endeavor was probably the best outcome in terms of maintaining a tenable legal precedent.
