I get that Trek fans tend to be conservative in terms of the franchise, which is why you have some that complain about window HUD displays because they only want monitors as that’s “traditional”. Like fans upset when an episode features a shuttlcraft at warp, simply because they thought TNG depicting them only at impulse speeds (which I always found odd) meant shuttles couldn’t go at warp, despite the fact that we saw it in TOS.

When repair robots made more appearances in DISCO I thought it was nice we could finally depict more of that. The franchise rarely ever featured such a thing because it was typically out of their budget, unless an episode like TNG’s “The Quality of Life” was centered around the concept of repair robots. Otherwise we never see them. But of course because we saw repair robots in DISCO that “broke canon” for some fans.
It's not like we have not seen small craft fighters before. In TNG, Wesley Crusher was training piloting in them (which got him in trouble). I also believe we see some of them in "Best of Both Worlds", when the Borg cube enters our solar system. And they are used in DS9 to tease some Cardassian ships in one of the epic space battles (Sacrifice of Angels).

As for shuttles, according to Memory Alpha, some shuttlecrafts of TNG and forward were equiped with warp drives. Type 6 had warp nacelles and some Type 7 were equiped with a warp drive too. Of course, they could not go as far and as fast as a starship.

The problem isn't having fighters, the problem is having thousands of them and never having any indication of their existance. Compare to reality, given that ST-ships aren't really that much bigger than our current ships. If you get onto an aircraft carrier, you can not help but notice all those planes being around, given that the ship is built to accomodate them. Now, if you go on a traditional battleship and there's somehow a small hangar on that ship that you never came across in addition to maybe a regular hangar for one or two float planes or helicopters and then suddenly the battleship deploys houndreds of airplanes *somehow*, you'd tilt your head for sure.

The Abrams Trek movies had a similar problem, but that shot from STD was just ridiculous.

I mean, that's my problem. A prequel already has a marked disadvantage in that it's rewriting the previous story, so unless you have a tight continuity, people are gonna notice. That's why many of the complaints I've seen even from people who like STD is that "it would be better if it was set after TNG" or how it's a Kelvin verse show despite boasting it's set in the Prime Timeline.

Oh goddess, don't remind me about that Tardisesque abomination of a ship.

Eh, my headcanon is that this "prime" timeline is just another AU.

I'm very much comfortable with the idea that Prime is just a new classification of the original continuity among us as viewers despite not being known in the universe of the original continuity that's trapped in the corporate phantom zone IRL.

Until the Picard series begins actively retconning the previous lore the way STD did. But then, with Kurtzman outed, maybe it'll be good, who knows?
