Well, IIRC, they have a rough idea of when each kaiju attack is scheduled to happen, but they can't predict an exact time. Maybe sitting a Jaeger under water and under that much pressure for weeks at a time is bad for the machinery? Not to mention the logistics of getting food, air, ect there.FaxModem1 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 6:29 pm You do have to wonder why they didn't just station the Jaegers at the breach and take them out anytime they came through, rather than waiting for them to wreck a city first. But then, these are the same nutjobs who built a wall so that the jaegers could have the world's largest swimming pool to play in.

I'm just gonna say, if a Jaeger can hit a Kaiju with a boat hard enough to cause some level of damage, and the boat doesn't instantly shatter to pieces from the impact, then conventional, non-nuclear explosives seem like they should be a lot more effective against the Kaiju than they're made out to be.

Re: Pacific Rim Review
One of the first things we see the military do in this movie is have fighter jets try to engage a Kaiju at melee range. I think that sums up how seriously we're supposed to take the military and physics element.

I just wanna say, that Chernobyl joke gave me the biggest laugh.
Seriously, love this movie, pretty much agree with Chuck's conclusions, deserves more love than it got. Certainly a better sequel than it got.

I know right. I mean sure they do that just because it looks cool but it doesn't make any sense when military jets could easily shoot they missiles at kaiju from long range.mathewgsmith wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 8:47 pm One of the first things we see the military do in this movie is have fighter jets try to engage a Kaiju at melee range. Extreme short range dumbfire missiles. In order to increase the payload, they had to remove guidance electronics and reduce the size of the fuel tank for the missile's engine, otherwise the jets wouldn't be able to mount and carry them. It's not like you need electronics that can deal with countermessures or track a target, because the Kaiju don't have the former and are kinda hard to miss, once you vaguely fired it in their direction. What you primarily need is MORE DAKKA and an earth-shattering KABOOM, with capital K and A BOOM.

That plasma gun seems to work a charm. Why not a shore battery of dozens if not hundreds of those?

Might have been desperation. Just judging by the review the F-22 (I assume) is firing its 20mm cannons (why I assume, the F-22 only has one), might have already expended its missiles and is going in for a close range attack hoping the closer range will give the rounds an extra punch to hurt the creature.
Doesn't make much sense, even if they are hoping a close range attack would work why try flying through its limbs to be smashed instead of staying behind it? Mostly its probably just to show fighters are useless (despite the fact I'm fairly positive if smacking the Kaiju hurts it missiles and bombs are certainly going to mess it up) to help justify giant mechs much how in my limited experience most giant mech shows do, like Gundam seems to show conventional tanks and fighters far inferior if not completely useless against mobile suits. Having boring but practical tanks and fighters filling the Kaiju with the only thing that makes something lighter would probably be a boring movie.

Re: Pacific Rim Review
This is a excellent movie, but I feel like they missed the boat on a solid trilogy.
Pacific Rim 1: first kaiju appears, military spends 6 days fighting it, finally wins with a nuke. Whew. Except the teaser shows another emerge.
Pacific Rim 2: development of the jaegers and their early use, with lots of growing pains. Movie ends with Pentecost emerging from his mech to rescue Miko.
Pacific Rim 3: essentially the movie we got.

Re: Pacific Rim Review
IMO Pacific Rim sold itself as a "Giant Monsters vs Giant Robots" movie. Without the giant robots, it wouldn't seem as unique. If you took the San Fransisco attack from the prologue, and stretched that out into a full movie, what do you have? Basically a Godzilla movie, but Godzilla is a copyright friendly knock off with an axe on his head. Film makers deciding "We'll put all the awesome stuff in the inevitable sequel" is how we got Terminator Genisys.JL_Stinger wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2019 1:38 am This is a excellent movie, but I feel like they missed the boat on a solid trilogy.

Now showing young Pentecost and the early days of the program, I could see that. (It would have to be a prequel though, not part 2 of a trilogy). There's some potential, but other than the Jaegers being more primitive I can't imagine it would be very different from the Pacific Rim we got. You couldn't even have a "the buerecrats are skeptical of Jaegers" plot as that was already done.
