Let's Talk RWBY and other Western Anime

Now that's out of the way, I have been reading some of RWBY's manga and tv show by amazing Monty Oum. This show is showing a really strong insight of how childhood tales will always be an inspiration for current and future generation, along with the mystery of Salem and Ozpin's relationship with the discussion of what Dust really is and the difficult to know "Semblance" in many of Rements people.

There are also other Anime that have been somewhat following Oum own ideas of making the own anime show instead of the regular Isekai and Shonju anime from Japan, though wile we can compete with Japanese entertainment we are not following their own theme of creative world-building like that where "only happens in Japan" view-point. I am only part Otaku since while I can love manga and anime I can filter my love for other entertainment like WLI21 or Discovery Channel.

I'm uncertain what exactly you want to discuss. Also, if you think that "Anime and Manga only happens in Japan", then you are wrong. There's plenty out there that doesn't happen in Japan and those that do, simply take something that is familiar to their most likely reader and use it as a background to their story. Like the US and New York in specific for Marvel and Gotham and Metropolis (disguise names for New York) for DC. I don't find that particularly noteworthy and neither good nor bad.

I prefer to consider RWBY and others inspired by anime and manga but not that itself. Granted anime is just what we call Japanese animation (or Japanimation if you are that old school fan) and manga what we call Japanese comic books. Japanese themselves don't really separate between ones made by they own and ones made by other people.

There are plenty of anime and manga that take place in some other world like Berserk or in another place in world like Black Lagoon or in space and other planets like Cowboy Bebop. Sure there are plenty of anime that takes place in Japan like pretty much every high school anime ever but those are just some anime.

Also it tells something about RWBY is that it's even part of fighting game Blazblue Cross Tag Battle made by Japanese video game developer Arc System Works that's known from they fun and flashy fighting games.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is totally anime - doesn't matter that it was made in the US. If anyone wants to get pedantic about it, I'll point out that "anime" just means "animation" in Japan, and that they refer to stuff like Disney films and King of the Hill as anime as well.

You know I always saw Avatar: The Last Airbender to be more like Chinese folklore, then again Dragonball in essence is a japanese adaptation of Chinese Journey to the West so what do I know.

More Taoist with a little bit of yin yang symbolism in the first season finale, and the air nomads are clearly inspired by tibetan buddhist monks. I don't honestly know much about confucianism other than that respecting the head of households is important and that roughly fits some of the earth nation people like Toph Beifong's family.
