Cloudflare terminating 8chan's service tonight

Really the trouble services like Cloudflare have is 8chan just will not even pretend to stay within the bounds of the law.

Even Cloudflare says they are within the bounds of law.

Considering the other thing they're known for is being an accessible source for child pornography that stays up for weeks or even months, it's surprising anyone looking for mass market appeal was still willing to host them.

Funny, the way I heard it was that was an attack by a journalist who was posting the CP himself.

I guess "doing nothing to inhibit openly planning terrorist attacks on the platform" was the bridge too far.

I really, really doubt that's the way it went down.

he hypocrisy comes from the "not the letter of, but the spirit of" stance. It's an academic point since 8chan will just migrate to another server, but the point still stands. You cannot claim to be for First Amendment rights and support an action like this.

I mean by this logic Fox Corp is violating my free speech by not letting me have my own Prime Time tv show.

Yeah, which is a thing that happens when you have a business relationship soured by poor behavior.

They can be upset but if you upset your hosts, then they can kick you out of their house.

Except in this case the host claimed to be a neutral party until apparently the autistic screeching got to them. Of course by doing stuff like this, it illustrates that they are picking and choosing, and thus opens them to lawsuits for hosting things like piracy websites, which is something they're currently fighting, incidentally.

To his credit, I'm not sure that Admiral is saying "Cloudflare MUST host 8chan!" His claim seems to vacillate between "Cloudflare is being hypocritical and has shown itself to not be real believer in the principles of the First Amendment!" at it's strongest and "This is kind of a dick move to people who paid for a service" at it's weakest.

But why anyone in this day and age would expect that a business would take principled stands on anything is beyond me. Businesses do not have principles - they're not supposed to. Cloudflare exists to make money. Being associated with 8chan is not conducive to that goal at the moment. Of course 8chan gets kicked to the curb. The glory of the market at work. And even the Leftists will cheer! (for now, anyway)
