I decided that hey, I love Star Trek, Babylon 5, and why not some other great sci Fi. I could go on into hours of my love for the genre and how it inspired and changed me... but man did a lot of it suck, and I blame a lot on some of the characters. So I decided, what character do you hate the most in a sci fi Genre and why? Only stipulation is, the character actually has some importance to the plot. You can’t name a one episode character like Okona, they have to have had a character. Now, on to mine for a few.
Star Trek: Honestly none, I can name a lot of characters I dislike but I can’t find a single recurring one I dislike.
Next Generation: Pulaski. Honestly I hated Wesley but he only became loathable by his last appearance (Still waiting for that for, I hope, Christmas) but Pulaski took the cake in her first episode. The difference between her and Bones and how they treat Data and Spock is massive. They wanted a Bones and I get that, but Data is not Spock. Spock bit back at Bones and actually was prideful and deserved a few blows to his ego, but in the end you got Bones did respect Spock and vice versa. Data has no malice and unlike Spock, is 100% pure logic. So Pulaski mocking Data comes off as more her mocking an autistic kid for being autistic, and as someone who is autistic, yeah I didn’t like that when I was a teen watching the show or now.
Voyager: Neelix. Not afraid to admit when I first watched the show, he was my favorite character. He seemed funny, I liked his actor, and I kind of painted him as the roguish imp of the group who was a lot like Quark but nicer. I still love Quark to this day. Neelix, on a second rewatch and a lot of the reviews of SF Debris... yeah he’s a shit hedgehog. He is petty, stupid, and stuff I found funny once I now realize was juvenile or me actually CHANGING what he did. I actually realized I changed actions he committed. I forgot he was a bad chef, I forgot he lied about everything, and I thought his relationship with Kes was healthy! Neelix is a shit hedgehog.
DS9: Ezri. For a character in only one season... yeah I didn’t like her. She replaced a character I like and every episode with her tried to give her something, but she never changed from what I saw her as. Pointless. She was just utterly pointless. She was Troi from TNG but probably worse. At least Troi can OCCASIONALLY be useful, I can’t remember a single episode of Ezri being good at anything that wasn’t the byproduct of someone else doing something better. Stop a serial killer? Yeah, she had a serial killer help. Find out who killed someone? She just looked at the guy smirking. Tell Worf that the Klingons are broken? ROM could have told Worf that with how obvious it was. Ezri is not as annoying as the others on this list, she’s just more pathetic.
Enterprise: Phlox. I only hate Phlox in one episode, but I will never let it go. When you commit genocide for ethnic cleansing reasons, you get on my bad side.
DIS: Michael. Honestly, Michael is just... there. I don’t hate her but I do hate how she’s 90% of the show. I didn’t care for her search for her brother and the whole mom reveal, and she just comes off as a weirdo instead of a human posing as a Vulcan, and the whole Spock sister thing just reminded me of Sybok. Michael just tends to annoy me the most because I feel like she constantly is the most important character on the show and I feel it’s undeserved. Had she been a main character but not the absolute focus that dominated the show, I woulda liked her more, but because she is the focus I just constantly see more of her and i’m Annoyed.
Babylon 5: Franklin. I honestly find Franklin dry and boring. He comes off as smarmy to me, and really self righteous. Franklin is the kind of guy who is utterly elitist to me and I never liked that, and it doesn’t help that he has the opposite problem of michael. He feels like he’s out of the plot a LOT. Like even episodes focusing on him feel like they have nothing to do with the major plot. Hell, even his own plot of drug use LITERALLY CALLED HIM OUT ON IT. He just comes off as a jerk and he never really grabbed me like the rest of B5. Still, I trust him with a scalpel more then I do Phlox or Pulaski.
Stargate: Kinsey. I get he’s supposed to be annoying, I do. But by god I hated his character and he got more and more annoying. Maybe it’s the fact that despite being a recurring foe for the cast, he’s an utter moron and one I just wanted Jack to blast away every episode he showed his face. He’s a religious nut with stupid plans that make no sense, constantly gets told the same lesson over and over and never learns, and he keeps on winning until the final episode where he dies. Sometimes I would consider that the best episode for getting rid of a villain who overstayed his welcome halfway through his first episode.
Farscape: Utu. She was creepy. She was an utter creep who hanged around the Farscape crew out of nowhere and no matter what creepy shit she was up too, no one really gave mind to her and it annoyed me. For a show that tended to be pretty smart in what the audience wanted, basically knowing what to keep and what to cut, the fact she stayed a main character despite being this weirdo who rewrote their minds and harassed them constantly while looking like a villain out of He-Man and the show never bothering to give me a reason why to like her, well I was ready for D’Argo to literally drop kick her out of Moya. That never came and I was annoyed.
Got any other characters in any other franchise or the franchises I mentioned? If so, bring them in. I would like to read them all.

Not Jar Jar for me. No, that would be Neelix. I can see why Chuck dislikes him, but Jar Jar was never meant to be more than a harmless goof and he actually grew the hell up.

My problem with your list is I mostly agree. Pulaski ticked me off on her first episode by mocking Data and the tridcorder stunt to find a 'circuit for a bruised ego' when he clearly pointed out she was saying his name wrong. I so wanted her to call Worf Mr. Woof and see how fast he put her through a bulkhead. Plus starting from chief medical officer can remove a captain from command? "Yep that's nice. There is a shuttle to take you back to a Starbase. Don't let the door hit you on your way out."
I really really want to say not Neelix. I want to defend him because the whole show was badly done and he had genuinely good moments that got shot down instead of nurtured. But no he was the worst. . . .
DS9 though. Nope Wynn. That poisoned honey voice of hers as she tries to sound like your friend and you know she just isn't. I cringed every time she showed up. Her only good point to me is when the bajorans were going to kick the Federation out and it came to light the dominant faction had cardassian backing. She could have still won there. But chose truth. . Once.
Enterprise. . . Most of the time I liked each of them and thought they had so much they could explore. Then fell so flat it was sad. I can't hate any of them for a show that kept being jerked around and saddled with so much.
Star Wars: Threepio. Jar Jar was pushed to the background after Episode One. Threepio was around for everything and always came off as annoying.
Most hated of these? Pulaski.

Re: Most Hated characters in Sci Fi
Alright well never let it be said I didn't take the opportunity to bitch about fictional characters like a good geek should.
Star Trek TOS: A lot of guest stars annoyed me but not the main cast.
TNG: Pulaski probably has to take the cake for me and Nealithi and Nobody070 stated why better than I ever could.
DS9: I personally hated Ishka and Zek a lot, mostly because Zek's voice was so irritating (I get that it was intentional but if anything that makes it worse because they should know to be careful about that). Ishka was just a bad mother and clearly was one of the main reasons for Quark's many flaws yet she barely acknowledges them and she's treated by the main characters like because she is a Ferengi Women's right advocate, everything she's done is justified. It just pisses me off and is why I can't watch a lot of Ferengi episodes.
Enterprise: I did not like T'pol, she was just boring at best and mildly bitchy at best, then again there is Phlox and his whole genocide thing . . .
I don't like thinking about Enterprise.
Star Wars: Rose Tico. Rian Johnson went with his first draft and she is why I instantly believe that. Her actions and change in character, from shooting Finn to keep him from deserting to ramming him when he is trying to sacrifice himself for the cause she believes in, make no goddamn sense and I can't figure out a real reason for her to change so radically other than Rian needed her to do so for the plot.
Babylon 5: I feel bad writing this because I like the actress's performance and she has good scenes but Lochley. She screams of "Ivanova replacement" and she gets shilled by characters without compellingly earning it. She is also a major reason Garibaldi's alcholism relapse is resolved which made me a little bitter, so to be honest I don't know if I'm really giving her a fair shake because of those behind the scenes stuff.

Oh yeah, i’m not a huge Star Wars fan, but if I had to say worst character in all of the Franchsie... Kreia. I may get a lot of flack for that but man she was the main reason I didn’t like Kotor 2. She was an annoying idiot from the first scene and the fact she’s the most important character of them all just got infuriating by the end. I gladly killed her and never looked back.

Um... Who? The only Daniel I can find is the Future Space Nazi who gets tricked by hologram-Garibaldi into admitting to attack-plans, promting his own demise and, by consequence, intiating the Second Earth Alliance Civil War, which ended in the Great Burn. I mean, plenty of reasons to hate him, but none of them are congruent with what you wrote. Who are you refering to?

I think he's referring to Franklin due to the drug addiction and misnamed him?Madner Kami wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 9:24 pm
