A NASA astronaut is accused of hacking her estranged spouse's bank account from space.
Anne McClain, whom the space agency says is "one of NASA's top astronauts," allegedly accessed the bank account of her estranged spouse, Summer Worden, while aboard the International Space Station earlier this year, according to NBC affiliate KPRC in Houston.
The two women are in the process of a divorce and battling over custody of a 6-year-old son, Worden told KPRC. She said she conceived the boy through in vitro fertilization and carried by a surrogate.
The story buries the lede, that this is an ugly divorce case. At some point these were people who loved each other, and Worden shared the password for her bank account with McClain.
There's a lot of talk flying around: Among other things, McClain accuses Worden of physical abuse. Worden is clearly upset with McClain being overly attached to Worden's child (and by birth and law the child is Worden's alone).
So - what's the motivation? McClain knows that things aren't great but still wants to take care of the kid, and uses that excuse to keep logging in to account statements, and/or has some OCD impulse to nag Worden for whatever. Being cooped up in a tin can for six months can do funny things to your perspective. You're away for however long, helpless as so much of your life passes by. And maybe the hope is when you get back to Earth you can patch everything back up.
Was it rude and inappropriate to do so? Certainly seems that way, especially in hindsight. But then again, did McClain figure she'd be divorced by now? Would this be a story if Worden and McClain did get back together? No, not at all.
This is surely messy case that might become part of history just because it was done up in space instead of down here on Earth. Then again maybe no one else than those two people involved will remember this happening.

That may have been the case before this became "THE FIRST CRIME IN SPACE!!". Now it's too late for it to be yet another case of divorcing couple screwing each other via lawyers. I'll leave it there as I am a divorced man trying not to be bitter about how I don't have anything from a house I lived in and contributed to for 14 years...
I for one may never forgive McClain, because this is probably the least interesting FIRST CRIME IN SPACE!!! I could have imagined.
Where's the locked room? Where's the possible alien life form? The mad scientist? Tens of thousands of people put this woman in space so she can do a little hacking? What's the next guy going to do, steal paperclips where no one has stolen paperclips before?
I hope she's found not guilty, so Elon Musk can get a beautiful scientist, a possibly unstable commanding officer, and a well-meaning but inexperienced XO on a flight to do this right.
First crime to be recognised as a crime. As far as I am concerned, sending up dogs and monkeys to suffocate to death in the cold of space was reprehensible. I don't know how those men actually slept that night, but probably it was very soundly indeed with a ''for the greater good'' being uttered if they thought about it at all.

At least 50% of the crime happened on Earth. That's like saying ''ah, fuck it, she hacked me from Russia. We have problems here in America that are more deserving of our attention.''
