Beast Wars Series Thread (Spoilers Allowed)

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

Beast Wars Series Thread (Spoilers Allowed)

Post by Winter »

On the subject of Transmutate I have to say that I have Very mixed feelings about the episode. On the one hand I love the interactions between Transmutate, Rampage and Silverbolt and the ending is, in my opinion, one of the best in the series. On the other hand, I don't like how Megatron is written as here is a powerful creature that is being handed to him on a silver platter that can knock out every transformer out in one shot except for Rampage meaning that Megatron can destroy all the Maximals in one attack, AND HE THINKS ITS USELESS BECAUSE IT CAN'T TRANSFORM?!

If we're going off one how useless your minions are then why do you keep Waspinator and Quickstrike around as they're the shining example of useless! Hell, Blackarachnia betrays him as often as Starcream did with the Original Megatron and he still keeps her around so why is he turning away a superweapon that he can easily control while he also controls another super weapon that hates him?

I also don't like Silverbolt's reaction when Rhinox suggest putting Transmutate in stasis lock because, and I quote, "Are we Predacons now?! Do we destroy whatever does not fit our definition of perfection?!" Dude, they're not talking about killing her they're saying that they need to put her in stasis until they can help her, idiot.

Still has a lot of great moments but those two bits really bug me.

I especially agree on the Silverbolt bit. It's one of his more idiotic moment and it really drew me out of the episode.

It gets even dumber when you consider that Spark Transplant is a thing. It's not even a case of "Lets ice her forever", but just "Let's keep her in stasis until we find a blank protoform and can transfer her spark in it".

Well the answer is obvious; Megatron is in charge of product development at Hasbro.

How do you think he's funding this operation? The ship wasn't cheap. To make up for it he did have to skimp on the crew though. Discount Minions Warehouse.

More likely Megatron is working with Michael Bay and used the money from the Transformer movies to fund his operation. Obviously he has nothing to do with them after that as Megatron would have made a better movie then Bay did, though I wouldn't be surpised if it was his idea to make OG Optimus Prime more of a jerk/villain.

Another thing that bugs me about this episode is the consequences or rather the lack of consequences. This episode really helped flesh Rampage out as a character painting him in a more sympathetic light instead of the unfeeling monster we see before and after Transmutate. In Transmutate we see that he does have the capacity to be good and with Silverbolt's last line in the episode, "For the moment, we are brothers." I honestly thought they were setting up a redemption arc for Rampage that would pay off somewhere down the line. But nope the events of this episode are never brought up again and have no impact on the series after the matter.

This gets even worse when you keep in mind that season 2 is the most serialized of Beast Wars as almost every episode having a long lasting impact, be it Dinobot's betrayal, the capture of TIgatron and Airazor or introduction of Rampage every episode this season made it feel like everything was tying into the greater narrative. The only exception being Transmutate, nothing in this episode, be it minor or major, has any impact on the story.

Silverbolt pretty much reacts dramatically to anything he disagrees with; it's part of that "knight in shining armor" personality he had throughout Beast Wars. Then again, it's very likely that 1) Everyone's still pretty emotionally fatigued after Dinobot's death (hinted at in the beginning of the episode) and 2) Rattrap's probably got 'bolt riled up by, essentially, acting like his usual self (which, as Chuck says, is being an asshole).

I believe we continue to see hints of Rampage's more sympathetic side as the series go on, though not much, especially once Depth Charge shows up. One does have to question how much Rampage was affected by the experiment the Maximals inflicted on his spark. Does the sympathetic side he shows to Transmutate (which I tend to believe was genuine) hint at the Maximal he could have become if he'd not undergone the experiments (if said experiments were even voluntary)? Who can say?

I defiantly think that his kindness to was genuine given how horrified he was upon seeing her death, if it was just a case of wanting a powerful weapon I don't think he would have been as emotionally wrecked as he was shown in the end. I also love that the ones who ultimately destroy Transmutate are the ones who sought to protect her as it was ironic and heartbreaking and I love how the episode ended on such a sad note and right after the death of Dinobot, just, Damn!

Like I said there are great moments in this episode, I know that I've only gone over what I don't like about this episode but that's only because the rest of it is so damn good that the flaws stand out all the more to me. Switching gears with the current disaster of a film that is Transformers: The Last Knight which bombed in the US and tanked in its second week in China, (I think it dropped like 82% or something) I wonder what the studio will do next with the series. It made back its budget but from what I understand it still under-preformed from what the studio had wanted.

Personally I think the series should be completely rebooted, start from the ground up and make films with the story of some of the most iconic Transformer stories but with the sophisticated writing of Beast Wars. Keep the focus on the Transformers plan it all out start to finish and it could hopefully redeem the series. Thoughts?
