ENT - Terra Prime

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

I mean, I can understand why Natives are racist against white people and some of them advocate making the reservations true nations, entirely separate from the US, even if I don't agree with them. Does that somehow make me racist?

Someone else commented on them showing a cute baby as something to rally against, and I'd have to agree that I was thinking that myself as far as people reacting in completely the opposite way as TP wanted. The thing is, I can actually understand what was supposed to be so scary to them - it's because the baby looked like a Vulcan in spite of being a mix of human and Vulcan. And I suppose just the idea that the mix is possible. Plenty of Natives have liked to badmouth half-bloods and less, and I think at least part of that comes from the idea that they as a people are being erased through this mixing, especially since this mixing is usually with white people.

Thanks for that information. Now I know one guy advocating for something counts as a push.

On the minorities and racism thing, my understanding is that some Social Justice types are arguing that racism should be redefined to racial prejudice with sociopolitical advantages. This is to contrast racial prejudice from dominant groups against racial predjudice from disadvantaged groups, not to ignore the later altogether though I can see how it could be interpreted that way.

And I would argue that they are simply trying to codify double standards. Also, their push to redefine words reminds me of Nazis to a rather disturbing degree.

a politician advocating for something is a push, but you are right, I should have used the example of muslims protesting lgbt education. It's more recent and more blatant.

Don't forget, only white people had empires and only white people owned slaves.

I'm going to make a crazy ass suggestion. One that may get me committed.

How about in this thread we actually only discuss real life politics as how it actually relates to the ****ing episode.

Call me Garth of Izar but it seems like there's actual substance in this episode worth discussing versus whether you think X and Y is racist or hypocritical.

Look, some people wanted the separatists to be more nuanced, and you ran in and said that racial separatists are un-nuanced, cartoony villains and Star Trek should treat them as such. I mentioned that some people see a more nuanced view of some racial separatists, and you first said something about cultural relativism that, AFAIK, was irrelevant, and then just repeated that Star Trek should treat them all in an un-nuanced manner.

And that's fine. You've got your opinion on what Trek should be pushing and how, and if I said you couldn't say that, I'd be authoritarian.

But others can be allowed to discuss whether or not racial separatists can be viewed as nuanced, and whether or not sympathy can be had for them. My use of black separatism was not a "Your side too!" moment, not least because white separatists are in no way my side, but an example of racial separatism that there may be more mainstream sympathy for, even though acceptance of it is in no way mainstream.

If you find this too triggering, I think it up to you to find a way to handle it. Exercise is a wonderful way to reduce stress, but you should talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program, and, more importantly, not sue anyone who suggested exercise.

The cultural relativism thing being, "I think racism is bad and that even if people think it's worth nuance, it shouldn't be treated as such because it's fucking STAR TREK. Star Trek is not a series that you can do nuance about xenophobia because the entire ****ing series is about reaching new cultures, understanding them, and loving diversity in all forms. This is like saying the Galactic Empire did nothing wrong in Star Wars. It's a complete nonstarter."

The problem with Terra Prime in this episode is that I think the stakes are very wrong for this kind of story. They don't need to be a bunch of big epic bond villains when the bigger threat they represent is the idea of isolating Earth and screwing with its potential destiny as a major player in the galaxy. Maybe also murdering Trip and T'Pal's baby.
