The time travel mechanics of Trek has differed in small ways in various episodes, but it's true enough that branching universes haven't even been hinted at in at least the majority of time travel stories prior JJ-Trek. At the same time, it's established way back in TOS that there are alternate/parallel universes, and there's no clear-cut reason why time travel couldn't result in someone landing in a different universe. Maybe what Spock did in Trek '09 resulted in two things. Going just by the films, it's clear enough that what Spock did was unusual, seeing as he didn't just head back to his own universe.
With that said, the trump card is always this- ultimately, the clear intentions of the writer outweigh common sense and logical consistency. When fans or another writer is dealing with an established canon, they have to work around what's established, not the other way around. The writers clearly intended for this to be a different universe. Their reasons for that can be good or bad, it doesn't matter. So it is written, so it will be done.

Mind you, it's also one of those situations where "reality" (air quotes) also is unrealistic. String theory is probably not true and it's very probable that alternate realities are just a bad idea. However, if they're true in Star Trek and so is string theory then the branching/parallel timelines would be how time travel would work. You just would believe it was overriden from your perspective.ChiggyvonRichthofen wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2019 4:53 pm The time travel mechanics of Trek has differed in small ways in various episodes, but it's true enough that branching universes haven't even been hinted at in at least the majority of time travel stories prior JJ-Trek. @CrypticMirror I meant the Caretaker's race...

it could be both time travel and interdimensional travel, there are things in the Kelvin Timeline not at all causally related to the point of divergence but still, Spock and Nero still traveled back over a hundred years.

Like what specifically though, iyp? I've seen people talking about this anywhere from Kirk to side characters or something, but quite a bit might have changed resulting from nero's incursion.Dragon Ball Fan wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 12:25 am it could be both time travel and interdimensional travel, there are things in the Kelvin Timeline not at all causally related to the point of divergence but still, Spock and Nero still traveled back over a hundred years.

Yes, Khan in this version apparently purged people when Scotty said that Khan was notable as the only warlord who DIDN'T.
