The days where "The people" could make a fart of difference went out with the machine gun, the tank and the fighter jet.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 10:52 pm Perhaps China as a nation should stand up to their government's human rights violations if they want to get in on our Star Wars and Starcraft.

That's easier said than done. Chinese live under brutal oppressive regime that has surveillance every were and is ready to crush any resistance to they rule and send people to prison to be organ harvested for even daring to say anything bad about that regime. So people even in China would rather live in comfort than risk they lives in fight that they will most likely lose.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 10:52 pm Perhaps China as a nation should stand up to their government's human rights violations if they want to get in on our Star Wars and Starcraft.

Re: Disney and China cozy up
I would honestly like to know why they even bothering to push Star Wars so hard in China. I mean, it just seems like more trouble than it's worth. So far it's clear that China doesn't care for Star Wars, or at least Disney's handling of the franchise. TLJ bombed so hard that they titled Solo 'Ranger Solo' to distance itself from the failing brand, but that did little good. Audiences in China apparently think the cast of the ST is unappealing and ugly, plus the action thus far hasn't been enough to really draw them in, compare the intense barrage of action in a Marvel movie or a Transfomers movie compared to the action in Disney Star Wars thus far, outside of Rogue One there's nothing special and sometimes flat out embarrassingly bad like TLJ throne room battle. So why bother trying to appease them when they're obviously not interested? Just save money on releasing and marketing the film over there and focus more on marketing in America, Japan, Canada, Europe, etc... Plus this kowtowing to China makes them look bad to other countries with the growing animosity towards China's practices.
Re: Disney and China cozy up
It's still big market so they sadly seem to think that they have to keep trying even if Chinese audience isn't into Star Wars. Besides money that they make with MCU movies in there seems to be main reason why they want to keep that market.

Re: Disney and China cozy up
For Star Wars in particular, Star Wars isn't that popular in China, but if the English version is done and all they have to do is dub dialog and leave out some cultural no-nos, it's probably a small expenditure relative to what they can make from so massive a market even with middling performance.
But not calling out the Chinese government gets Disney access to more than just Star Wars sales. For example, Maleficent 2 has done much better in China than in the U.S., and that'll help to make the film profitable.

Pretty much. Chinese market can make movie that flopped else were successful. This is something that Warcraft movie thought us by making money in China when that movie flopped else were and now Maleficent 2 did same.

Mecha82, did you even watch Chuck's Lucas commentary? He was inspired by the US's unjust war in Vietnam for vague "stopping Communism" reasons. Granted, he probably took elements from elsewhere, which included the Nazi regime, but it wasn't limited to just them. And that he was cribbing from Foundation also shows why the Empire almost had a kind of grudging respect in the original trilogy. Not so anymore.
Also, BCM, why check out Disney+ if you criticize Disney? That is going to contribute to the streaming bubble bursting if it ever does. I ain't even going there. You say boycott, and then plan to give money to Disney, lol. Hell, me and Mom are talking about dropping Netflix. It's just too expensive, because they're losing money to push more original content, and it's not enough licensed older content for us.

All this being said, I don't see Blizzard and Disney being much of a problem as they're bringing these IPs into China proverbially speaking. I wouldn't go so far as to say that activists on the matter are trying to punish the Chinese people, but I don't really see this as a perverse enterprising.clearspira wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2019 11:39 am The days where "The people" could make a fart of difference went out with the machine gun, the tank and the fighter jet.

I'm just guessing on the matter, I'm really not sure the logistics between Disney and the Chinese government.
