After watching some videos on COPPA, that honestly might be more of a concern. There's that existing attitude toward sci-fi and fantasy, but besides that, anything animated is being considered as targeted toward children, and a few of the shows Chuck has covered actually were specifically targeted at children (like Avatar: The Last Airbender). He's probably going to have to designate his videos or channel as being for kids, and go back to being completely "family friendly" so he doesn't get fined a ridiculous amount per video for being in violation of COPPA. The effect of this is that his videos are going to be a lot harder to find for anyone who doesn't know they're there, and will basically be impossible to monetize.

This is more intended as a presentation for FTC types on some of the immediate fallout of YouTube’s response, but this is one of the more researched and analytical videos out there right now.

The tldr is “YouTube has made this more of a problem theough their own content systems and is trying to pass the buck where they should not, and probably using the resulting panic to try and influence the FTC to dial back said burden.”

Disney: Hurting Content Creators since 2015! Hell, even further back. But that ties back to what I'd said before. When they wanna revitalize your childhood space opera for the big screen, the first thing they immediately do is burn your nostalgia by tossing away the old material for a "fresh start." Mass-marketed lies, huh? Not that I'm trashing people who like the new material. Or even the new material itself. Just that they're every bit the lying, imperialist uber-corporation strawman people have in their heads and dislike. With good reason.

To be accurate it's big corporations in general and not just Disney and like I said in another thread some Japanese companies like Toei don't even recognize Fair Use which has made lives of anime and Tokusatsu reviewers difficult. That said COPPA has nothing to do with that so YT is pretty much to blame about it.

It is. That said, while Toei is still a greedy corporation, I've also said I love how they treat their non-canon material. It is why some centrist or right of center nerds are looking to Japan now rather than America with the sheer drought of good entertainment we have in the movie industry. And granted, the endless female oversexualization and Kawaii can get exasperating at times, but in the end, it is the way in which we wish our entertainment still was.

The FTC has put out a clarifying document:
https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/blogs/business-blog/2019/11/youtube-channel-owners-your-content-directed-children

The gist of which is “yes, the written rules are sorta broad, but much like pornography it’s usually way more obvious that something is directly marketed to kids than the description implies”.

Then that should be in the written rules. The thing is, the entire push behind this was a bunch of moral busybodies complaining about stuff that wasn't actually meant for kids, but they thought "looked like" it was meant for kids. Kind of like the effort to get tobacco banned because of flavored stuff that comes in colorful packaging, because "obviously" that stuff is meant to make it more appealing to kids in order to get them smoking. It reminds me of people who complain about South Park and/or anime because they think anything animated should be for kids.

Look, I think the solution is relatively obvious. Stick up a title card in front of every video that says the video isn't suitable for younger audiences, and if the FTC gets on your back, point at the title card.

That won't matter to the FTC.
