Thoughts on Shenmue 3

Post by clearspira »

So Shenmue 3 is out - I know right? I didn't realise it had been out for a fortnight either. I only knew about it because of Jim Sterling's video today. The lack of advertisement for one of the most notorious pieces of development hell since Duke Nukem Forever has been spectacular to behold.

So I have to ask: has anyone played it? Anyone know anyone who has played it? What's it like? Because from what I have seen it looks like Shenmue 1 and 2 but with ''slightly'' better graphics. As in ''barely PS4 quality, probably more like a high end PS3 game''.

I was around in 1999 but I did not have a Dreamcast. My first experience of the first two games were the remaster for PS4... and look. I will freely admit that back then these games were revolutionary in some ways. But DAMN to 2019 eyes these games are appalling.
The quickest way to get me to hate a game is to waste my time. It is why I don't like Death Stranding and it is why I don't like this. Forcing me to stop and wait for shops to open to progress the plot is the literal embodiment of wasting my time. So is pausing the plot to get me to hump boxes using a forklift for literal hours. And the voice acting... wow. Ryo reminds me of Keanu Reeves.

Jim Sterling had some harsh words towards Shenmue 3 and it's developers. Basically Shenmue 3 has been left behind by Yakuza series that does same things but far better.

Shenmue's latest sequel is merely more of the same? Surely you jest!

Honestly, not rocking the boat is probably the way to go on a project like this, fuelled by nostalgia as much as anything else.
