JK Rowling Backlash

Post by BridgeConsoleMasher »

https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisettevoytko/2019/12/19/sex-is-real-jk-rowlings-support-for-woman-fired-over-gender-remarks-stirs-debate/#27d185f321e7

I understand the concern of a public endorsement on that size of scale as she has a platform. But it's not exactly uncommon to see otherwise intelligent people respond to the polar construct of biological sex as if it is gender. And though while I lean toward confidence that JK Rowling would have proper sensibilities on the matter and thus concern for the employee, I'm not sure on the facts of the firing itself. Like I'd like to assume that the person had rational interests in mind, but it could have been something like dog whistling or being considered on some level as inflaming. And then also though that guy that wrote the Jerry Maguire style mission statement about Women being biologically empathetic instead of critical surely came off as a douchebag.

I don't see what is issue with this. I guess some people think that public figure like JK Rowling shouldn't be vocal about they opinions that conflict with they opinions.

Rowling can express an opinion.
I am allowed to agree or tell her she is an idiot and everything in between.

It is difficult for some people who liked her books and need to project themselves on to her.
So they tell her to shush so they can keep their bizarre asymmetrical relationship with the author that wrote their favorite wizard books.

As a guy who has been disappointed with Orson Scott Card since I decided to learn any biographical information about him, and Scott Adams since he started dunking his head into a vat of egomania goo... I little sympathy beyond telling the readers, "If you read more books this wouldn't be so world shattering, grow up."

Any fan of the sci-fi genre is either ignorant of or made peace with the notion that great creators often have....odd personal viewpoints. Heinlein ended up looking awfully authoritarian towards the end of his life. Orson Scott Card still can't get on board with gay marriage. As Chuck has noted, John W. Campbell was a giant in the world of sci fi, but also kind of a racist nutjob. The list goes on and on.

Don't project yourself onto creators you enjoy. And don't let the reality of who they are affect how much you enjoy what they write. Keep that author firmly in the grave.

Namely, that Rowling abruptly discloses canonical details about characters belligerently over twitter, the reaction specifically I'm not so sure but I think it's like Yuka with Star Wars Legends.

I nothing against JK Rowling personally, but I think she confuses the difference between ''expanding the lore'' and ''rewriting the lore.'' Black Hermione pissed people off for example, not because she's black, but because Rowling lied out of her ass that she had never previously stated Hermione's race even though Prisoner of Azkaban carries the sentence ''Hermione's pale face.'' It also involves ignoring the covers, ignoring the fact that Rowling said the Watson was perfect for the role, and ignoring the fact that Hermione was stated by Rowling to be based on herself.
Then there is gay Dumbledore, who was only gay by any evidence in book 7 given how the previous 6 books had Grindelwald as nothing more than just another dark wizard.

Point is that any visit to the Potter wiki nowadays reads like a fanfic with reams of shit that you would never have gotten from the books alone which imo is bad writing.

This is the court case Joanne was referring to today: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/maya-forstater-transgender-test-case-equalities-act-employment-tribunal-a9253211.html

Mind, being UK media this still gets some facts wrong in the bigot’s favor, but they still manage to get the gist: defendant tried to claim denying trans people’s legal gender as protected speech, judge gave her a WTFIWWY.

Joanne, being a now-uncloseted TERF, tried to boost this as a horrible injustice. Twitter isn’t having it.

Anyways, there’s a generation of folk for whom Harry Potter is how they learned that being hated didn’t have to be forever, and how to recognize a world going rotten, who rightly feel pretty betrayed by this even if the signs pointing to this day coming for a few years. But y’know, the first person to teach you those things will hit hard, so I’m inclined to give them their space.

honestly Her 'rewrites' come off more like she's trying to score 'points' with various crowds. Then again that seems to be what popular people do.
