Honestly, following the Russian Collusion thing, and the fact that the Democrats are moving forward in spite of very obviously not having anything on yet another controversy of their own making, they've basically handed him the election on a platter, and quite possibly have soured moderates who might have voted for them in other positions on the party as a whole.

It's hard to tell with a bipolar selection among two people, but I'd guess he serves as the exception more than the rule.

You can go back before that, to Calvin Coolidge (winner), Teddy (also winner), then to Arthur (didn't run, like LBJ), but you end up going back that far and politics gets weird, with the Democrats winning the South, Republicans dominating California. Go to even earlier presidents and then there aren't even Republicans anymore.

It's typically a federalist vs confederate divide. The organizational polarities tend to revolve around that due to the nature of our constitution. By no means exclusive to the US though.

Not sure. Obviously not having a truly strong Democrat candidate doesn't help.

But from what I am seeing is that there are far more moderates leaning on 'anyone but Trump' side than for him. Kinda like alot of moderates were in the 'anyone by Killary' in 2016.

Like I said doesn't help that there isn't a true Democrat candidate that can attract more moderates.

Assuming somehow Republicans actually vote to boot out Trump and Pence takes over, honestly I can see him doing very little.

It also throws off the Republican side for the 2020 election. Do they put Pence forward as the frontrunner or do they put someone else? Pence will obviously get the hardcore Republicans (who will vote in anyone but a Democrat).

Not saying Democrats are not the same though. Far left and far right will always vote against the opposite party no matter what.

Sad thing, Democrats could win this election if they had a better option. Just like those Moderates who voted Trump because they didn't like Clinton but liked Sanders. Those same Moderates which have been disappointed in Trump could vote for someone else because anyone else but Trump.
