Because it's Wonder Woman. The first movie did little to push a sort of agenda, thankfully but it came out before this particular era of SJW push. Hopefully it doesn't turn into Captain Marvel. As I said, that movie movie on it's on is really unremarkable and we all watched it solely because it was part of the MCU and somewhat linked to Endgame. Now we're in phase 4 and I can actually care less about new movies.ChiggyvonRichthofen wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 7:37 am
For people wanting a female-centric superhero hit, Wonder Woman 1984 has a chance to be the biggest film of the year at the box office.

Captain Marvel did as well as it did because people thought the movie would tie in into Endgame. It really didn't. You could easily skip the movie over Endgame. There is some talk I have heard about trying to partner Captain Marvel with Spiderman. Some say that was to keep her grounded and keep people interested in the character.excalibur wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 12:19 amBecause it's Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman had little political agenda involved and was a fairly straight forward movie that just happened to have a female superhero lead. That and the movie was good. Of course the second movie will have a lot of interest in it. I question the use of Tiger Lady in it and not something more in line with Wonder Woman's powers.
I got nothing to say here.

Are you fucking kidding me? It takes place during World War 1.McAvoy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 1:55 am Wonder Woman had little political agenda involved and was a fairly straight forward movie that just happened to have a female superhero lead. There are discussions of Imperialism, there are scenes in which heads of state are just in a room talking about securing peace, There is a debate between the villain and Wonder Woman about whether humankind is redeemable and whether war is part of their nature.
The movie is about Wonder Woman, the avatar of the warrior woman who believes in the inherent goodness of mankind... PUNCHING WAR IN THE FACE.
At a point that isn't even symbolic anymore. They just are turning to the scene and saying what the movie is about.
And keep in mind I fucking hate that movie, but the idea that it is somehow devoid of politics is just asinine.

Warner Bros. has changed the name of the film to "Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey." I guess that makes sense, as a Harley Quinn movie featuring the BoP.

I get the sense that McAvoy is referring to commercial solicitation of progressive material.Rocketboy1313 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 2:03 amAre you fucking kidding me? That's exactly what I was talking about. It's hard not to have a movie placed in that time period and not talk about the politics of that time-frame. That is a given.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 2:37 amI get the sense that McAvoy is referring to commercial solicitation of progressive material.Rocketboy1313 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 2:03 amAre you fucking kidding me? Re: Birds of Prey Is Currently On Course For Worst DC Opening Weekend
When I see people complain about Captain Marvel, Rey, female ghostbusters, or whoever else being too political or "SJW", one of the most common things they do to ward off the accusation of sexism is to say that they love or at least don't dislike Ripley, Sarah Connor, Wonder Woman, Black Widow, etc. And honestly that seems to me to be true, at least in most semi-normal corners of the internet. That doesn't necessarily justify all the criticism of Captain Marvel and others, of course, but I think it's fair to say that there are female superheroes out there that for whatever reason attract very little of the same criticism.
I haven't seen Birds of Prey, or Harley Quinn herself, attract any of that kind of negative attention either (admittedly I haven't been searching). Of course the problem for Birds of Prey is attracting any attention at all. The title change won't help now.

Re: Birds of Prey Is Currently On Course For Worst DC Opening Weekend
FWiW, the opening weekend audience was about 53% male. Shazam's audience was about 57% male. I think men weren't staying away in droves because of the feminist slant of the movie or Obi Wan's take on it.
There's a flip side, though. Terminator: Dark Fate, Charlie's Angels(2019), Ghostbusters(2016)... Feminism may not keep men away, but it doesn't seem to pull audiences in.
