Re: MLP Lincoln's Day (?) Show
So is Chuck gonna keep doing MLP specials for increasingly obscure holidays? A few years from now are we gonna tune in to the SFDebris Feast Day for the Patron Saint of Bulgar Wheat and South Cumbrian Cheesecloth Makers MLP Episode?

Re: MLP Lincoln's Day (?) Show
this might be getting off topic but since this is for caparison, no, Frieza helping was a one time thing and the next story arc, he is back to full villain and still clear the heroes will not hesitate to kill him if the opportunity presents itself. Gogeta letting him go doesn't count because the latter was probably both exhausted and about to unfuse.RobbyB1982 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:38 pmYamcha, Oolong, Krillin, Tien, Piccollo, Vegeta, 16, 17,18, Fat Buu and Beerus were all enemies first before they became allies. Even pure evil Kid Buu was reincarnated into Uub who Goku took as a disciple.Dragon Ball Fan wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 6:28 pm I only know one shonen anime, the Dragon Ball series. starting with Frieza they didn't really reform any villains, even Majin Buu doesn't really count because the one they became friends with is technically, not the same person as the one they fought after he expelled his evil side.
And with the advent of Super, even Freeza has basically been pushed into a "he's still bad and self interested but he'll help out against bigger threats" role. At this point Cell is pretty much the only holdover that never switched sides, and if his spots weren't such a pain to animate I'm sure they would have brought him back by now too.
I already explained why Fat Buu doesn't count as a reformed villain and Beerus was never really a villain, he was always neutral, it was only bad from the Earthlings point of view in that particular case. and Uub is a different character then Kid Buu who has new memories and a new personality.
and Krillin was never an enemy, just a rival to Goku.
but back to the topic at hand, sometimes, it shows the younger protagonists getting punished or even one of the main six in the case of Rainbow Dash but it happened so rarely that nobody remembers them. and characters like Starlight and Discord are never shown to face consequences ever. and don't say Discord is too powerful to do anything to, not only do we know for a fact there is at east one thing we know for certain can nullify his powers that Equestria has full access to but the writers could think of something else if they wanted to.
and some have said to just imagine punishments happening off screen but I still for the life of me come up with anything in my head. especially since dialogue from the season eight opener explicitly says that Tempest Shadow was free to go after the movie despite again, being a war criminal.

Starlight said she was ready to accept punishment, she would not have objected to be thrown into a dungeon.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:01 am Add in that Starlight was clearly remorseful, that Twilight wanted Starlight on her side because she was so powerful. Putting her in a dungeon wouldn't have helped anyone.
and even in the proper timeline, Starlight is guilty of several crimes, abuse of her cultists, assaulting a Princess, which is treason, etc.

Sept. 16th is Saint Ninian's day, so maybe we'll get a Saint Neigh-nian's special?Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:42 pm So is Chuck gonna keep doing MLP specials for increasingly obscure holidays? Yeah, I wonder if Starlight getting no punishment/becoming a main character was a Hasbro mandate.Dragon Ball Fan wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 9:23 pmStarlight said she was ready to accept punishment, she would not have objected to be thrown into a dungeon.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:01 am Add in that Starlight was clearly remorseful, that Twilight wanted Starlight on her side because she was so powerful. The way the episodes are written, it feels like Starlight was initially going to be properly punished, but Hasbro probably noticed that the character could be good for toys, so she was redeemed instead. It would explain how rushed and unearned it felt, and why Season 6 had a lot of meta jokes about how easily Starlight was forgiven.

Every time Chuck talks about his time as a teacher, I imagine one of them finding his reviews and being Very Confused listening to Mr Sonnenburg rant about Star Trek and anime.

that's another thing, a lot of the time, these redemptions or even protagonists getting let off the hook for realatively minor things doesn't narrativly flow with expectations of consequences for wrong doing. like the test audience ending of Little Shop of Horrors.Sailor Nimue wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2020 2:33 amYeah, I wonder if Starlight getting no punishment/becoming a main character was a Hasbro mandate.Dragon Ball Fan wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 9:23 pmStarlight said she was ready to accept punishment, she would not have objected to be thrown into a dungeon.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:01 am Add in that Starlight was clearly remorseful, that Twilight wanted Starlight on her side because she was so powerful. Re: MLP Lincoln's Day (?) Show
Enjoyed both sets of two parters, though I'm kinda sad Chuck didn't mention that there's a few episodes throughout season 5 where Starlight can be seen in the background spying on our heroes. In one episode Pinkie mentions time travel while Starlight is hiding in the background, thus Pinkie unwittingly set the time travel plot in motion.
And yeah, Starlight basically was the Handicapper General at first. Again, it's strange to see a character start out as one thing and end as another, redeeming herself along the way and struggling to overcome her own flaws, even towards the end her flaws like playing favorites or letting her anger get to her came into play. And I do like how she became an important character, yet never really took over the show or felt shoved in, aside from season 6 which had some major stories focused on her, but that's to be expected given her new status as 'supporting main character'.
Also, did anyone else think Dash being one of Nightmare Moon's lieutenants was a reference to how she was tempted by the Shadow Bolts vision in the second half of the pilot?
Also somewhat disappointed he did comment on or feature Starlight snapping 'QUIET!' at Twilight's attempt at a speech with a bulging vein in her forehead.

There is a take someone gave - I think it was Silver Quill but it might be another reviewer - that Dash and the other batknight might actually be working for some sort of resistance group, as their reaction to Spike mentioning Celestia could be taken as worry someone is about to draw attention to the idea there might still be loyalists around. Of course, it also could just be worry that mentioning her sister will make Nightmare Moon fly off the handle. I prefer the idea of Rainbow Dash secretly working to find a way to overthrow Nightmare Moon from the inside though.ChrisTheLovableJerk wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2020 3:24 am Also, did anyone else think Dash being one of Nightmare Moon's lieutenants was a reference to how she was tempted by the Shadow Bolts vision in the second half of the pilot?
What is really interesting is the idea that the bat winged ponies were once regular ponies. The show did have a few transformation spells around, but the idea of at least semi-permanently changing something about the shape of one part of you while leaving the rest the same is interesting.
I actually like this whole season, and all the little foreshadowings you mentioned with Starlight and her watching and getting the idea possibly from Pinkie Pie. And I was introduced to the series around the time the first Equestria Girls film came out so I was already aware due to spoilers that Twilight would gain wings, would travel to a human world, etc., so those things didn't bother me because as I started watching they were all things I was aware would be part of it so I knew it would reach those areas and didn't let myself get locked into thinking things shouldn't change, or Twilight shouldn't get wings, though I was a little worried that the idea of her travelling to a human world wouldn't mesh with everything else. Ironically, Equestria Girls ended up being something I liked about as much as the rest of the show, and I agree with the idea that Sunset is the best character in the show. One thing I really like is that, in the end, during the last song of the Last Problem, they showed her in the group with all the rest of Twilight's non-Mane 6 friends. I'm rather hopeful for Chuck's take on the spinoff.

I'm not sure what it says about Starlight when 'Overcome the urge to mind control people' is a 'more than once' issue with her.
