Italy isn’t just in an economic slump, its population is also sagging, pushing the country into its biggest demographic crisis in more than a century.

The number of people in the country fell for a fifth year in 2019, and deaths exceeded births by almost 212,000, the biggest gap since 1918. President Sergio Mattarella put the issue in stark terms, saying it concerns “the very existence of our country.”

“Families are the connective tissue of Italy,” he said. “Families are Italy. This trend needs to be reversed.”

While immigration could help, the figures there are also not encouraging. Italy’s migratory balance declined 18% last year, with immigrants exceeding emigrants by only 143,000.

Italy’s population is about 60 million and Eurostat projections see it declining to less than 56 million than by 2050. That sets it apart among the euro zone’s biggest economies: France and Spain will record population growth in the period, while Germany’s will be little changed.

What they need is more immigrants to fuel their industrial sector. Dropping birth rates are actually a GOOD thing long-term.

If the Italian economy was based on mass production through economies of scale... which it isn't.

Italy still has a very much craft based economy fueled by skilled artisans (the nature of being a mountainous country that was a collection of competing city states, think Greece). It takes a lifetime to lean how to make Venetian glass, and the profit margins are so high that migrants aren't useful as workers or even consumers.

Italy's economic woes are from the Euro. What economies of scale Italy does have (think FIAT) are crushed under the potential scale of Germany. Coupled with a currency they can't control, Italy is forced to borrow to make up the difference.

Yeah, I ask for sources is to evaluate them as valuable or not.
That is why anyone asks for sources. To evaluate them.
If you have one source that is news worthy specifically because it sounds insane, then yeah I write it off.
