This had me going wait did people hate this, I felt like it had a pretty positive reaction, I thought it was a good movie.

So I checked rotten tomatoes it has a 95% critic score and an 87% audience score. I mean I guess there were some people who hated it and maybe you hang out in a community where all those people are aggregated, but I don't know it does not seem like a movie that was hated or even considered mediocre by most standards...
Hmm, well I am not going to lie. While I am fond of the movie I am aware that it is a very unforgiving film in terms of writing, directing, and producing. The casting in particular is admittedly mediocre. Still though I consider the biggest of my guilty pleasures.

Two Matthew Broderick movies for me.
Wargames
and 1998 Godzilla. Jean Reno was awesome in that movie.

I think that's the reason why it's so disliked. People just wanted another action film and were puzzled at the criticism and satire in it.
I don't recall the movie being disliked, and I only know of Doug Walker being confused and surprised that it was a parody (and subsequently, his audience introduced to it through him). It was pretty obviously a spoof, and generally enjoyable.
I remember the movie getting a lukewarm reception at best at the time, and I found it generally a bit meh, but not aggressively bad and had some good spots. For whatever it is worth the tomatometer is 36% Critic and 47% Audience which suggests there were lots of critics unimpressed by it.

Godzilla is definitely a movie lots of people had big problems with, I remember War Games as pretty popular when it came out and generally liked and I have not heard people say they did not like it since (not that it has come up much in my circles).

I think Broderick is way less popular now than he was in the 80s and 90s but that is different from people thinking the movies in the 80s he was in were bad...

Wargames is a very well received movie as far as I can tell.

AllanO and BridgeConsoleMasher, you must live in a forgiving area. Whenever that movie seems to come up around me I keep hearing arguments about the military can't be hacked by some kid. They are smarter than was shown. No such weaknesses. Of, insert your choice of expletives, the kid has to be smarter than all the adults.
I can't even have it on the shelf without hearing about it.

I checked Rotten Tomatoes before I posted the last time and it has a 93% critic score and a 76% audience score, I guess that reflects some negativity and souring since release, but it seems a far cry from generally hated.

To be honest the biggest surprise to me is that people are even talking about it at all, I think about it from time to time but I have an interest in old computers. The last time anything outside my head brought it up was reading the novel Ready Player One (where it got lots of love).

I don't have much confidence in 80's techno security at Norad.
