Yes pigs are surprisingly intelligent but difference between them and dogs is that we treat dogs like family members while pigs are treated like food animals. I know that anyone who doesn't own or hasn't owned pet might have difficult to understand this but pets (mostly cats and dogs) really become part of family. Which is why they deaths also hurt emotionally like losing one. I sill remember that sorrow that i had when my old cat (he was 16 years old) died at end of previous summer.

Though I think CmdrKing would say that it would be OK if it was, as long as "the odds it either helps or hinders the state of the world are infinitesimal."
More like attributing eating dogs to asians as if it was a universal characteristic is racist, people avoiding chinese restaurants and turning down asian uber drivers is racist.

I... agree with you on all that.

My apologies; I thought you were referring to my mention of some parts of China moving to ban eating dogs. I promise that I'll try to be more careful in the future.

Pigs can be pets. Cows can be pets. You can have emotional sorrow over a pet and then likewise eat the same same species without sorrow.

I think it comes down to society. We have dogs and cats as off limits as far as eating. There was a short period where the US stopped slaughtering horses due to love of horses. But we were slaughtering horses for other countries so when we stopped we shipped them to Mexico for example to do it. Once it became known that it was a incredibly rough trip for the horses the ban was lifted.
I got nothing to say here.

PSA: instead of hoarding supplies, please remember that stopping the spread of the virus means other people also need to be able to wash their hands.

Last time I checked and stocked our shelves, soap is the one thing that nobody panic-buys. Yet.

You can bet that the mentality of most people is "so I don't catch it", not "so I don't spread it."

I'd think for kids growing up on a farm, pigs and cows would be like big giant pets, kinda like Rose on Golden Girls. You can grow to love animals, and still kill 'em for food because that's part of the cycle of life. And yet in some ways, more honest than how our modern industrialized machine kills pigs and cows. I mean, a shotgun seems like it'd be more humane than some of the other shit they do... lobsters, anyone? (shudder)

I do not see the point of panic buying toilet paper. Lets be honest about this, in a pinch, you can wipe your bum on almost anything. Got an old rag? A newspaper? A big leaf? Sorted.
