Herd immunity is working just fine. The problem is our comfortable western lifestyle that has bred us to know nothing else but freedom. When people are told "do not go to the pub because you will kill someone" many choose the option "fuck that old person I want a pint".

Japan with its hierarchal society has seen its cases at a low level. Why? Because they actually listened.

Actually the UK is different to most. It follows Italy's development considerably more closely, than anyone else's.

As for Japan... That stands to reason. Japan has one of the lowest testing rates for CoViD-19. While it's likely on the lower end of the scale of infections, it very likely has one of the highest dark figures.
