Did he think the virus was nature cleansing of the 'evils' of the world, or something (and seriously, has anyone else seen a few parallels to the AIDS Crisis in this whole mess, especially in the government's near-nonexistent response to it)?
He was an Accelerationist, which is a nice word for people who want to carry out terrorist attacks in order to make sure the collapse of human civilization goes faster so that we can get to Mad Max territory and the white race can rise blah blah blah with people like him as warlords.

And yes, these people are a real thing.
How definite is this assertion that this guy in particular adheres to that specific agenda?
..What mirror universe?

So those people also have bloated egos alongside they sick minds that make them think that they are huge bad asses when reality is opposite. Well that's to be expected.

Based on articles I looked up, he saw the governments' response to the virus as a cover / excuse to take civil liberties away from White Americans and put them in the hands of the Jews, and he was a fan of a White Supremacist / Christian Identity group called "The Order" which argued that taxes were just a money making scheme by the Jews. He has been planning an attack for months and considered various targets (including a black majority school), but settled on a coronavirus hospital specifically because of the crisis.

The Feds had been on to him for months and the bomb he tried to use was actually a fake that they supplied him with as part of their undercover sting operation.

Most of these guys are a combination of anti-social and paranoid personality disorders and their goal isn't so much to "watch the world burn" as strike a blow against real of imagined persecutors who they feel have been trampling on them for years, and they usually plan on dying in the process so that the forces they are railing against can't get revenge on them. They believe that ideals like peace, love, tolerance and equality are manipulative lies designed to soften them up and trick the population into letting themselves be exploited and trampled on, so they go out of their way to target otherwise innocent or vulnerable victims not just because they are easy targets, but to show how "tough", hard and ruthless they are (which, in their mind, shows that they aren't falling for "the lies"), and to escalate tensions between groups so that people within their own group will feel compelled to think and act more like them.

It brings out all the nuts. There are people insisting blacks can't get it, one person saying we need to hang homosexuals and women who don't cover their heads in church (I am not making this up), and anyone with a political agenda who wants to hang this around the neck of someone they don't like.

Who said only muslims can be terrorits(sic)? Never heard that one before.

They don't care about "the world" so much as they care about "their own people".

Also, some of this is natural temperment that they would have been born with.

In Kentucky, you can't walk 20 miles without tripping over someone's compound or militia that they've prepped for the big disaster that they will emerge from as kings. The smart ones are scams where rich upper middle class preppers get barely functional "shelters" built for 4 times the price of normal carpentry.

The FBI Report on White Nationalism:

"The report concluded that “lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent right-wing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.” Released just ahead of nationwide Tea Party protests, the report caused an uproar among conservatives, who were particularly angered by the suggestion that veterans might be implicated, and by the broad brush with which the report seemed to paint a range of right-wing groups.

Faced with mounting criticism, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano disavowed the document and apologized to veterans. The agency’s unit investigating right-wing extremism was largely dismantled and the report’s lead investigator was pushed out. “They stopped doing intel on that, and that was that,” Heidi Beirich, who leads the Southern Poverty Law Center’s tracking of extremist groups, told The Intercept. “The FBI in theory investigates right-wing terrorism and right-wing extremism, but they have limited resources. The loss of that unit was a loss for a lot of people who did this kind of work.”
