Re: Coronavirus - the new pandemic
The CDC is now recommending masks for everyone. They say "non-medical" masks, presumably because they want to save the medical masks for health care workers who are probably being exposed a lot more.
There's non-crank evidence that it can be airborne. "While the current [coronavirus] specific research is limited, the results of available studies are consistent with aerosolization of virus from normal breathing," according to the letter, written by Dr. Harvey Fineberg, chairman of a committee with the National Academy of Sciences.
That's pretty damned nasty.

Airborne is a very subjective term. Sneezing is technically airborne. But there is no evidence that clouds of Covid are literally in the air.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:46 pm The CDC is now recommending masks for everyone. He's right. I can't picture Hitler wearing a mask either.

Sorry, I really should be more precise about something like this. The National Academy of Science believe it can be aerosolized by talking, and maybe by breathing. This was in a study published by the CDC using epidemiological data.clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:50 pmAirborne is a very subjective term. Sneezing is technically airborne. I wouldn't take much stock in what the people that host the Oscars think about it. Aren't they all actors?

I thought we'd been over this?
The CDC did not warn against using chloroquine phosphate. The CDC warned against self-administering it.
And, in general, it is unwise to use fish powder in a package marked "For ornamental fish only" because one of the ingredients might help.

The very article Fuzzy linked noted it is used to treat some medical conditions, and labs in more than one country are investigating its use against Covid 19, and Andrew Cuomo is also eager to get trials started.Chloroquine phosphate, when used without a prescription and supervision of a healthcare provider, can cause serious health consequences, including death.Clinicians and public health officials should discourage the public from misusing non-pharmaceutical chloroquine phosphate (a chemical used in home aquariums).

Any fairly simple, non-tight-fitting mask might stop droplets from being coughed or sneezed right at you (or vice-versa) but I'd have thought do bugger all about aerosols. Try spraying some aerosol air freshner and see if you can still smell it...clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:50 pm

No, I'm not remotely persuaded that all the mask business is anything more than an ineffective token gesture to say "look, we're doing stuff" by making people do pointless things. They might just have a little effect if you're stuck on a packed bus or train or plane I suppose in reducing the range of spreading from a cough.
