With all the threads here about Disney Star Wars, I wanted to make one for what you think the highs and lows of the Disney canon is. So the question is fairly straightforward. I will go first.
For me, the high points were stuff like Starkiller Base and the Death Star Destroyers. It was like the wackiest superweapons of the EU on steroids. And RO. The story was a bit bland to me, since I feel I have a far superior tale in the older Dark Forces books, but... that rockin' Vader battle at the end. I literally rewatched it six times when that first came out just to get to that Vader battle. So awesome. And it was near the start of production, so it worked a lot better. I also liked the actors. I think many of them had great potential, even if their bosses wasted that potential. And it was awesome seeing the original actors back, too. And I applaud Mr. Johnson for wanting to subvert your expectations. I think that concept could have used work, if that's what he wanted, but A for effort in stepping outside the box. And TROS was pure insanity, it's like Revenge of the Sith. Convoluted as hell is yet crammed with so much that it ends up working despite needing a longer runtime.
The low points for me, and I think this is true for many other people... I HATE the politics Disney or Ms. Kennedy brought into LF. It's embarrassing to me especially whenever I agree with it because these people are not the best messengers to their cause, and it is less they wanted talented storytellers than people who think the same way politically. It's why they can just toss aside so much writers with experience and so much lore that could have helped them build the sequels if they had done a bit of research or listened to people like Mr. Chee or Mr. Hidalgo. Corporate limitations also ensure that they can never live up to what they preach, it's just to score points. Like the two-second les-kiss in TROS. That was never going to make it into conservative countries. It's fake diversity that ignores real diversity and the diversity of the past. What does need more work? LGBT representation, but it needs to feel natural. We are not getting that. And it is like a train wreck to watch unfold.
But I want to hear what you guys think. Do you agree with me the sequels and the new movies have their own good points? Do you think the politics are embarrassing too? Please, share with me in the replies down below.

Let's not forget small screen offerings that are returned TCW, Rebels and Mandalorian. All great shows that brought new things to canon. Things like Grand Admiral Thrawn and TIE Defender. Oh and those also have some really good writing and story telling.

I'm a bit confused here? I never got why "recanonizing" stuff makes the fans happy. I feel as if we need to press our case harder to continue telling Legends stories as an alternate timeline. That would present a fallback to people who dislike anything they've done since 2014, especially in the post-Endor timeline, and give Disney canon more breathing room for the creativity they said they wanted. Though to me it's a big issue when LF declares "firsties" while doing so. But if it makes the fans happy, who am I to disagree? But stuff like Thrawn and TIE Defender is hardly new. Though yes, seems nowadays the brand is finding better success on the small screen, which is where I think they should go. Just put the movies on ice for longer than two years. But what do I know? Just a guy with an opinion.
Thank you, Chuck.

Sure some thing like Thrawn and TIE Defender that I mentioned aren't new things but as fan of both I am happy to see those in canon. I can't think any other character from old EU besides of Mara Jade that I would like more than Thrawn and TIE Defender has been my favorite Imperial star fighter since Star Wars: TIE Fighter on PC back in 1994.
Mind you I am also tired at certain kind of fans of old EU and those kind of fans are reason why I can't touch old EU material anymore.

Fair enough! Hope it didn't seem like I was accusing you. I'm sorry if I did. And it's a weird inverse we all have. We seem to hate Star Wars fans, and yet hate the top brass too. It's bizarre. Though I'm personally not a fan of recanonizing stuff, for those who like it, eh, good on them. More power to them if they can get it to work. I would have preferred a Thrawn story back in Legends, one that told what he was doing prior to Outbound Flight, since that is where my bias lies. There is no reason we can't tell stories between both worlds now. As Matt says, "More Star Wars is good for everyone." Which is why it's so baffling at all the poor decisions LF and Ms. Kennedy and others have made. They say canon does not matter, yet they adhere to it so rigidly at the same time. I don't know. I guess Mr. Martin's comments make sense then. Just ignore it or try and enjoy it. Since I suspect Ms. Kennedy and even Disney ties their hands. Just try to find what you like, and hope it gets better.Mecha82 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 12:25 pm Sure some thing like Thrawn and TIE Defender that I mentioned aren't new things but as fan of both I am happy to see those in canon. High point everything with Kylo in TLJ. Low point bringing back Palpatine.
