Whataboutitsm does let us compare alternatives, though. Europe's performance tells us that single-payer is not a magic bullet for Covid 19. The US performance has been in line with western Europe's general performance in handling Covid 19.clearspira wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 12:03 pm The US has the top of everything. Yes the USA has the absolute best facilities, but it doesn't matter, as most Americans have absolutely zero chance of getting access. Ever.
The greatest con trick the 1% ever pulled on poor Americans to convince them that helping the rich is helping them - and yet anything that helps ordinary people get access to things the rich have, is called socialism, and is therefore bad.
This pandemic has exposed the holes in the US system unlike anything has before. Fortunately, due to how your election system works, only the rich actually have any chance at all of making the top job. And before anyone says it, yes, I do know that most prime ministers in Britain have been to Eton or a similar school and I do know that the NHS is not perfect. Whataboutism however does not change anything.

I am at least thankful the death toll has been very low in my neck of the woods. I feel especially sorry for all the people of New York. I've heard stories where they have been welcomed as pariah in other states, even forcibly quarantined. It's hard to argue with their logic, but at the same time, you can see the toll it's taking on the visitors. Just heartbreaking. The Chinese government should be embarrassed. But that would require them to feel shame.

Look, America's doing just as well as everyone else.

Then again this doesn't surprise me at all since I already knew that he doesn't care about regular Americans at all. And why should he. He is part of richest 1% so he and his friends have no problems paying from private healthcare.

That was my first thought. The viral nature of it I think though doesn't make it so clear.Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 9:28 pmBut... aren't the populations bigger? What is the difference?
It's outbreak from the first day, so I'd think they follow the same logarithmic scale a little more closely, but America has a ton of more populated areas than those places combined in terms of major cities at least. So it's like, even if they start at the same time, you have potentially a bunch of different pools that are gonna take off as it spreads to every major city in the US.

And New York is a big port of call, where this started here... right? I mean, I don't follow world news past the really important stuff, such as this, but New York has harbors, airports, shipping lines, international companies, and stuff, etc, yes? Like I said, I feel very sorry for the people in that state. Whether they are Republicans, Democrats, natural-born, immigrant, SJWs, KKK, or something else. I hope they can develop a vaccine soon. I especially worry for my sickly mother and the rest of my family.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 10:08 pmThat was my first thought. Comparing France, pop 70 million, with the USA, pop 328 million, is definitely the most honest thing to do.
But just in case anyone is interested in the progress relative to the population:
Cases per million people:
USA 1,599
Canada 618
France 1,986
Germany 1,491
Italy 2,518
Spain 3,487
Deaths per million people:
USA 62
Canada 17
France 212
Germany 33
Italy 322
Spain 355

It's why, and please don't take this the wrong way! I'm not political - really! But it's why I tend to be skeptical on the whole urban vs. rural gun/crime rates... thing. Pardon the Buffy Speak. Crime rates are higher in higher population centers for that reason as well. Per capita? And I say this without bias against guns or anything. I live in an area full of hunters, which I'm fine with. Though, of course, obviously I object to them with use on a human - in proper context, of course.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 10:47 pm

Yep! While crime is often thought concentrated in cities, the incidents per capita are a lot more varied.Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 11:46 pm

I imagine more crimes happen per square kilometer, of course, but likewise for more births, injuries, weddings, and mimes trapped in imaginary boxes. Seeing cities as hotbeds of crime is a little unfair.
