TOS - Metamorphosis

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

No, I just don't feel like responding to a casual discussion when someone is being a complete idiot. At some point it's like "okay, you're fucking stupid, I don't need to break this down any further." We're discussing a TV show for fun, and if talking to you is like talking to a brick wall then how is it fun? We're at the point where you're making stuff up to win an internet argument, dude. An internet argument about a TV show. That is the point where I laugh and walk away from you.

Occam's razor is not some scientific principle. The "simplest" explanation is that distance is constant, velocity increases linearly with acceleration, and mass is constant. As we learned, space is curved, distance can shrink, mass can increase, and there's a universal limit to acceleration that stops velocity from ever crossing light speed. All of that is far less "simple" than Newton's physics, yet it is what actually happens, really and demonstrably. I won't even get into quantum physics, electrons as planets orbiting a nucleus is very simple, electrons as probability fields in discrete mathematical shapes is completely unsimple.

So trying to apply Occam's razor as some grand principle of science in order to win an internet argument about hypothetical other life on other planets is a joke. As for your complete misunderstanding of what "god of the gaps" is as an argument, and your pathetic attempt to pretend that anyone else other than you says that shit... go away.

I've given you some reading if you actually want to read it. Read it, don't, it doesn't really matter, because ultimately I don't care about you.

God of Gaps is a principle used in anti-evolutionary and anti-science Evangelical doctrines to say that where ever science cannot say exactly how something happened, then it was god that did it and that science has failed.

More generally it can also be applied to any claim that can't be fully explained or contradicted with existing knowledge - a way to shoehorn in any old idea - "well it could have happened, and if you can't definitely prove me wrong then you should treat my idea as equally plausible as anything else."

Oh for fucks sake, this is so pants on head fucking stupidly wrong I'm not going to let it go.

Science is absolutely about being open to the possibilities. Science is about exploring different possibilities in a systemic, logical manner. That is what makes science fiction so great - many ideas in science have come from science fiction because speculation, even speculation with sometimes very little grounding is inspirational. Many people have become scientists after being inspired by the idea of discovery, of finding new possibilities and bringing them to everyone.

"God of the gaps" is a thought-terminating cliche. It's saying "we don't understand something so instead of going and finding out we'll just say 'god did it.'" It's offensive on a visceral level to science, because science is absolutely about exploring the possibilities, while 'god of the gaps' closes them off.

Saying "we've already seen every possible way that life could emerge, and there is absolutely no other possibility of it happening" is also a thought-terminating cliche. If this was based on firm, well-reasoned science then that's great. Science is as much about closing off possibilities as it is about discovering new ones. It's not based on that. It's based on a fucking misunderstanding of a a pop-culture slogan.

What you did is about as interesting as saying you understand literary analysis of textual works because you know all about irony - you heard the Alanis Morissette song.

For Thebestoftherest, please do not listen to this guy. There are many things science currently can't explain. Science is as much about knowing what we don't know as it is about knowing what we do. We have many, many things left to learn and explore, there are many things out there that are not fully explained. There are vistas of science to explore, and they're fascinating. "God of the gaps" is not about leaving things partially explained, it's about filling in those explanations with a thought-terminating cliche. Which is, you'll note, what Riedquat did when he filled in our lack of full knowledge with "actually, I know everything!" Only instead of God, he's filling in the gaps with his overinflated ego.

Those are actually trying to replace things we know with utter nonsense. Like, we have a lot of good models of how the pyramids are built, and there's some really cool things you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lasCXujNPfs

It's basically God of the Gaps part 2 - any time you find a hole in our understanding, insert aliens.

The show is kind of an insult to humanity in that it shows that we can't do anything without alien assistance.

I been watching some YouTube videos lately, the history channel claims that dark skin people can't make their own world wonders for being primitive, and that the Nazi are genius practically a new race.
