He started with the assertion that riots accomplish nothing. I provided a counter.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 8:44 amReally? That's the best answer you can give? A counter-question? You never were particularly good at debating in school, were you? Plus, you can not prove a negative, as it would be proven by the absense of proof.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 3:57 am Where is your evidence that it DOESN'T accomplish anything? You're the one making assertions without a shred of evidence.

You didn't provide a counter, you set up, locking your arms and said "Nu-uh!"

Is it enough? Hell no! The protests are young. Change doesn't happen in a week. Hong Kong has been protesting for months and months. There is enormous support, and it is growing every day. If it takes weeks or months, liberty is not easy. It's harder on the cops, and it will stay harder on the cops. They will break before we do.
Edit: Also, here are some actual violent protests. In other countries:

These protests are violent.
How hard do you want to crack down on peaceful protest?

And the fact we're still fighting over racial issues... how successful were they, now, in hindsight? Don't blame the GOP on this. That's a deflection. Two wrongs don't make a right. It feels like all the protests of the 1960s, which people fought for, wound up being meaningless in the end. Don't turn to the forces of hate and rage. That leads us down a dark road that just stirs the flames and escalates the problem.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 7:58 pmI cited some social progress that had happened. Re: Another day, another police beating in America
I sincerely suggest to actually read a history book. It was Martin Luther King's insistence on peaceful protest that brought things forward. The riots after his death and the attempts of violent change resulted directly in cracking down on black communities, which dragged on and brought us to today. The conclusions drawn from those violent riots up until today, is a prime reason for the militarization of the police, which you decry so hard, in the first place. You know what is easy to sell to a population? Hard measures, armed responses and harshening the law in order to fight a violent mob. You know what you'll never be able to sell? Killing people gathering outside in the street and holding up a banner. Take a guess which of the two will get you to where you want to be.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 7:58 pmI cited some social progress that had happened. Watch this, to actually get a proper perspective on things:

And bringing up Greece and Ukraine... Seriously? That's the kind of standard you want to measure the US by? And are you even realizing that you are argueing for the use of violence in order to enact a political change? You know what that is called? Terrorism.

Tbf, I do get where Fuzzy is coming from. They're so fed up from the lack of progress, they wanna get more radical, start getting more physical. It's the age-old gut-instinct every time we're seen to be set back two steps for every one we take forward. But then, by acting that way, you ensure we're then driven back another three steps, so we're set back ultimately by four steps, canceled out by that brief one step. To stretch a metaphor beyond all reason.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 9:08 pmI sincerely suggest to actually read a history book. But yeah, that's where Fuzzy is coming from. I get it. I just don't think it's worth it since it leads to worse problems, long-term. Even if they fix a few issues in the present.

Is this how poorly educated people are?
Terrorism is using violence against civilians. If you want to see some of that, I have a video for you:

You literally can't recognize terrorism when it's right in front of your face.
Right now the protests are peaceful, except for the actions of the cops. We can copy Hong Kong. We can change things.

RN, the news outlets, for whatever credibility that's worth, are saying it was protesters setting fire to buildings. Not the cops. What's your take on that?
