I think that J! and Fuzzy Necromancer's thread sort of proves why the left, and not the Trump supporters, are the ones who are the existential threat to the continued existence of America.

This is why I don't take Worffan101's "oh, everyone is an American" stuff seriously. We have a large population that don't want to be Americans, they want to replace America.

What? The US is still going exist regardless of who's running it, the fight is for what form it will take. And I rather it take the form that doesn't lead to folks like me (an autistic pansexual) being relabeled as mentally ill and/or being hunted down like rabid dogs. That's more likely to happen if the current administration stays in power.

But, I'll admit, if I had somewhere to go and the means to get there, I'd be gone by now.

Oh, and, genuinely curious, how would The Left 'replace America'? And with what? And can you define 'America' in terms of what would be replaced?

It's like 'Make America Great Again': when and how were we 'Great' before now? Helps me understand what the desired endpoint it.

Now you are subjected to great fury just for suggesting that biological sex is a meaningful category (see J.K. Rowling). Therefore, your implication that this hatred of the Founding Fathers and this separatism is just a fringe position does not fill me with any confidence. Today's fringe position is what everyone is required to believe in a year or two.

I think the national refusal to reckon with the founders in their totality, to unblinkingly and poisonously venerate these men over two centuries dead, has been deeply unhealthy and contributed greatly to the stagnation and injustice in the country. Indeed, we've refused so hard to rethink and look at the reality of these men who did both monstrous and momentous things that we've let that spill over into a refusal to stop venerating complete monsters.

And so, the people have decided to take matters into their own hands, and if that's what it takes, that's what it takes.

I have no interest in policing the activities of people who have been systematically ignored by government, which is the only relevant commentary on the targeting of specific statues and similar monuments.

And given that the current power in government hasn't recruited, trained, and targeted the protesters here, and nobody is targeting books, teachers, or other avenues of *learning*, but just empty idols, the comparison to the Cultural Revolution is quite pathetic.

We've talked about Washington and Jefferson owning slaves for as long as I can remember. That was not that uncommon back then. Those men are venerated for the uncommon things they did.

The people could take many of these statues down at pretty much any time, by vote, but some people decided that their vengeance on long-dead white men was more important than the will of the people.

Unfortunately, the authoritarian tendencies of the left are leaving less and less room for compromise.
