I am willing to bet these people think Earth is young too, thousands of years old not billions. Because of their lack of understanding scale and perhaps religious beliefs.
Yes, because if they believe one silly thing, why not throw in the rest of them you dislike from others? In my experience over the years, the types that hold these views commonly seem to be be the self-satisfied irreligious types of recent generations who believe only the things they discover themselves are only ever really true and trusting any authority's opinion is "just what
they want you to do".
They are people blinded and enveloped by their bias filter who see no reason to look outside of it (And every reason not to).
No does not need to be religious to have silly beliefs, but that is more reflective of you and your outlook on religion than it is of silly beliefs.
You focused too much on remark on the religious part of it. But I will bite.
When it comes to flat Earth and young Earth there is more likely a religious element involved in it. Especially the Young Earth part of it. Especially if they reference 6000 years as the age. Flat Earth is probably less religious motivated than Young Earth and more likely someone's comprehension of scale.
Also since you said your own experience, in my OWN experience yes there is a religious element involved with Flat Earth. Yes that self satisfied people who believe they know what they need to know due to their religious beliefs. They have faith and that's all they need.
Sure paint me in a brush all you want. Think me of a militant atheist or non religious person. After all you know me so much, so be self satisfied about knowing me so well.
All because of a random remark.
I got nothing to say here.
