Well, outside of "urban" school districts, most schools don't criminalize their children enough to install metal detectors.

We didn't have metal detectors in the urban schools I went to at the time. That came a little later.

When I first saw the episode, eight year-old me found it weird at the silliness of the Autobots' predicament. Then came this review in which I found out that it was the Season 2 finale. Confusion turned to anger as Ironhide was treated like the Butt Monkey right before the movie. One minute he's treated like a joke, the next minute he gets his head blown off by Megatron.
