You can't look at that Fox News picture and tell me everything's okay there. This is every blonde on Fox News:



You'll notice three guys. Blonde people are 8% of the population, that it makes perfect sense that three guys are blonde. That's about statistically what you'd expect (more or less). Now... what's going on with the women?

This is not normal. This is not okay.

Okay let's concentrate here a moment. Rupert Murdoch has a reputation and his networks have been known to be right leaning. So a snippet like that picture could make me lean toward the thought that he prefers an image from a groups active in the 1930 and was mostly put down in the mid 1940's. But I have gotten wary of groups sanitizing 'facts'. There is a wonderful article out there about how harmful Dihydro monooxide is. How it is a solvent, used in various cleaners and other items. But is not a recognize harmful chemical despite the number of deaths attributed to it. But lets break the name down. Dihydro = H2, and mono-oxide O, H2O or water. Everything said technically true, but slanted. So there are 54 blonde people working in front of cameras at Fox News. An organization in 86 countries world wide. And just the link on the people who are in front of the cameras at Wikipedia show there are more that go before the camera than just that list. And several are not blond.
Now I admit I did a quick check on this.

But let's assume you are right. This is all they have. What does the left side provide?

Now I do wish to come back to respect authority because you mentioned respecting experience. And I rather believe things should be a meritocracy. But even that concept has torpedo holes in it.

So there are 54 blonde people working in front of cameras at Fox News. An organization in 86 countries world wide. And just the link on the people who are in front of the cameras at Wikipedia show there are more that go before the camera than just that list. And several are not blond.

But let's assume you are right. This is all they have. What does the left side provide?

So you're right, it's hard to generalize. But! We have a very good control group - men. Fox news commentators are actually almost bang on 50/50 (it's 50.1% male, 49.9% female). Now interestingly, women are twice as likely to be naturally blonde as men* so we would expect to naturally see a ratio of somewhere in the ballpark of 2:1 blonde women:blonde men.

So there's three men in that picture. That should give six blonde women, give or take. Maybe say three to twelve, statistics being a bit skewy. Sooooo... yeah, that picture. Now I suppose you could say there's a bias against blonde men (and I think if we poked it there is - blonde is a feminine beauty standard) but wow is it hard to explain that image.

I'd say the "left" version would be whoever is the most competent to report the news, regardless of hair color, but that's a rather lame statement in and of itself. Obviously "competent to report news" is a catchall term that is multivariate, and may even not have a single dominant archtype (the news might be most effectively reported by multiple approaches - one size fits all is not necessarily the answer). Does blonde hair make you more competent to report news? I would tend to doubt it. I would say though that having someone of similar appearance to you on a news channel would be a benefit to reporting news so I would say that diversity has at least some influence on it.

Anyway, that was just part of my post, so I'll happily circle to the rest with you when you get to it. Aware I tend to write novella posts, that's why I try to do headings where I can.


*I was about to put 50/50 and was like "wait, that's an assumption, I hate assumptions. Skeptics don't make assumptions where we can avoid it". So I checked google. Boy I was a little shocked to learn that women are twice as likely to be blonde, and men are three times more likely to have black hair. The more you know!

Exactly! The more you look at it the more you realize there's a lot of approaches, and none of them could be said to be "the one true way", and all of them have upsides and downsides - including establishing a system that's so all inclusive that it takes just this side of forever to establish any sort of hierarchy (and all the variants of non-hierarchical or limited hierarchical systems).

That's one of the many things that's cool about science fiction, you can imagine cultures where any one (or multiple) of these cultural standards are changed, and work out what sort of society results.

"Wealth = worth" has never been accurate, for one. Yes, wealthy people are often looked up to. So are very intelligent people. So are famous entertainers. So are people in certain professions. So that one is right out.

"Heavy value on ownership of goods, space, property" Property rights are indeed important in the west. Nations have tried to operate without much in the way of property rights, and economically it has not worked out very well. That's something NPCs have not learned, and is why the NPC label fits.

"Your job is who you are" has also never been true. Your job is part of who you are.

"Objective, rational linear thinking" was supposedly a white trait, too. And people rejecting "objective, rational linear thinking" explains a lot.
