Pretty much that.
Though I'll add that I don't see casting a woman, even going out of ones' way to do so, as anti-male, because white men have traditionally dominated and still to some extent do in many places, and because I don't see society as a zero-sum game played along demographic lines, where only one demographic can win. It costs me as a straight white man nothing to let women and minorities a chance at the limelight. Besides, as I've said, I feel that a female Doctor makes thematic sense for the series.
Ultimately, the quality of the show, as always, is going to come down to how well the writers write it, and how well Jodie Whittaker acts. I have little concern about the latter. I do have some concern about the former, though mainly for reasons that are not about any political agenda (which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing, in and of itself). I'm more worried about general clichés, melodrama, and lack of continuity, while will drag down any writing, political or otherwise. As well as the lingering residue of Moffat's disappointing final years in charge.
But even if the writing is shit, as long as Jodie Whittaker is good (and we have every reason to believe she will be), it'll simply mean that she's on a par with Capaldi's era. And I loved Capaldi's performance, despite the often poor quality of the writing.
To the point that, as much as I think a female Doctor needed to happen, I'd have probably been fine with Capaldi holding the part for as long as Tom Baker if he wanted to.

Re: The 13th Doctor announced
Looking forward to Jodie in the role, all the more that I haven't seen her in anything yet. At least I can go into Series 11 blind, without any expectations. Last year, I predicted in another forum that the Thirteenth would be a lady, but everyone dismissed it as unlikely. I'm glad I guessed it, though more or less by accident.
Anyway, I'm currently rather psyched for this year's Christmas. I'm hoping Twice Upon A Time will be the finale Capaldi and the Moffat era deserve. The First and the Twelfth, on an adventure together ? Whatever happens, I doubt I'll be bored.
Agreed on that point.

Baker's longevity was a bit of a fluke, though. One that will probably never reoccur in the future. I would have liked four series of Capaldi, but one has to take what he is given. Makes me appreciate and cherish that we see each lead actor for only about three years all the more...The Romulan Republic wrote:To the point that, as much as I think a female Doctor needed to happen, I'd have probably been fine with Capaldi holding the part for as long as Tom Baker if he wanted to.

I wasn't sure if they'd actually go ahead and do it, but it was so heavily hinted at and foreshadowed and built-up in recent years that it was pretty obvious for several years that it was likely Moffat's intent.Petike wrote:Looking forward to Jodie in the role, all the more that I haven't seen her in anything yet. And female leads in SF action series have taken off in recent years (which no doubt exacerbates the outrage from angry conservative men who feel that they're being replaced, though in my opinion their are still more than enough male leads).
Let's see: Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Fury Road, Wonder Woman, the new Star Trek series, some of the Marvel TV series (there's a Supergirl series as well for the DC side), and now Who... Probably some others I'm missing as well.
Its also, as I've said before, a particularly logical fit for Who, due to the possibilities offered by regeneration, the fact that a large part of Who's success is due to its ability to constantly reinvent itself, and the fact that one of the recurring themes of Doctor Who is the question of what defines one's identity when one's physical body and personality are subject to change.
Really, I'm surprised people didn't see this coming.
I hope so too, but... Moffat.Anyway, I'm currently rather psyched for this year's Christmas. I'm hoping Twice Upon A Time will be the finale Capaldi and the Moffat era deserve. The First and the Twelfth, on an adventure together ? Whatever happens, I doubt I'll be bored.
Man hasn't made a really good episode since Day of the Doctor. Heaven Sent and Hell Bent had hints of greatness, but he really dropped the ball on that arc overall, particularly with the second half of Hell Bent.
Yup, three full seasons plus some specials seems to have become the standard.Baker's longevity was a bit of a fluke, though. One that will probably never reoccur in the future. Pity. I'd have liked to see what Capaldi could do under a different head writer. Hell, I felt the same way about Smith.

Hell Bent had it's problems, but Heaven Sent? Heaven Sent was an exercise in perfection. It was a fine-tuned Swiss watch with every piece doing exactly what it should, the pacing was flawless, everything fit together wonderfully.

Re: The 13th Doctor announced
Heaven Sent had some wonderful moments (in particular, I think the closing sequence, with the Doctor breaking through the wall, is more than any other scene the moment that made Peter Capaldi my favourite actor to play the Doctor). And taken in isolation, I'd have probably considered it a very strong episode, though it still suffers from some minor examples of irritating Moffatisms that have become overused (like huge time skips). But primarily, it has the misfortune of being the middle segment of an overall poor arc, which drags it down a little for me.
Don't get me wrong, though- its still one of the best episodes of Moffat's run, and probably THE best since Day of the Doctor.

Re: The 13th Doctor announced
After resisting leaving an (admittedly) stupid comment on the SFDebris thread saying that requests for Discovery episodes are now open ("Have them find the Discworld, find a stargate on the Discworld, and gate to a world run by candy-colored ponies!"), it occurred to me -- I wonder if SFDebris will be changing his icon after the new Doctor comes along. If it didn't reflect past Doctors, then never mind.
Some will say that it doesn't matter. Some might say that this is just an annoying side question that everybody is now the dumber for having read. To those people I say -- look, a squirrel!

Make Star Trek into a crossover multiverse?
Hell, it couldn't be worse than most of the Trek made in the last twenty years.
And I doubt SFDebris' profile picture will change. IIRC, this forum has only existed since Capaldi came in, so it hasn't changed with the Doctors, no.

Although iirc, he did use an Inquisition =T= briefly, so there is precedent for him changing. The Romulan Republic wrote:

Re: The 13th Doctor announced
But, really, there's nothing wrong with preferring a particular Doctor. I'm open-minded about new Doctors, and I think a female Doctor was the right move, but as of right now, Peter Capaldi is my favourite as an actor, and Nine is my favourite as a character (though really, I am fond of all the Doctors, to varying degrees).
