Just finished re-reading Trek: Insurrection Issue no. 1.2 and I'm not happy of Ensign Spock letting his conflicting Vulcan side turn him into a prideful yet supporting character. That has been waaaay too done in the last, Idk, 5 maybe 12 years of comic history with John De'Gauls re-editing of what constitutes as a sci-fi comic.
I read a lot of comics of what makes an elf, and theres two variations:
1. Tolkien Elves, prideful, inter-racist (hate within ones community), highly knowledgeable yet self-sacrificing during stressful situations. Sometimes to the point of death, which also supports self-martyrism.
2. Zry-steen elves (aka Dead-True elves), more flawed by human standards, can create miracles from bad situations, moderate knowledge, far more willing to co-exist with other cultures including its own, but has a looming hate towards bad parental powers; i.e. gods, monarchs, sub-species creation.
What the writers just did is just unbelievable. Turning Spock into early-Tuvok.
Now you finished screaming from that sentence. Yes, some stupid group of writers did not pay attention to what is canon and turned Spock, with this quote, into this monstrosity.
"Admiral Carmen if you would? No action would help the Del-tiians unless they are in contract with Federation alliance, if we were to purpose of their people that deuterium deposits are in their system but simply not wish to travel the stars for such a mineral. Then by logical conclusion their species does not own this region of space. All Federation citizenship requires Warp-reactors unless other alternatives are discussed."
Gah, that sickening know-it-all pride! Who cares about Warp cores if these people have the capability of opening short-spacial "hops" across the universe!?
Should you guys think Spock is being a Tolkien elf or not in the canon tv universe?
Plus admit it, Romulans are basically Dark!elves. Vulcans are the high!elves. Combine the two with TNG Borg implants and you get the techno version of the twin species from the Dark Crystal movie.

Do not pity a Slave for the Slave-Lord, but hear the power of what Chaos can be.
All Beings bow before the children of he who bound their flesh by their words.
Fall and wail, all flesh, bone, soul,& power is a servant to Yun-man, the First Slave-Lord.

Spock's mainly just an observer of things in the show. He's basically just there to do his job and nothing else. He's adverse to both Vulcan and human identity.

When will Jedi stop acting like Vulcans!
Re: When will Vulcans stop acting like Evles?!
The real question is when will Vulcan stop acting like the English.
I'm not joking, either. Think of the original cast as all human nationalities and Spock perfectly fits as the cold, aloof, stoic, stiff upper lipped Englishman that is contrasted with the down to earth and emotionally attuned American captain.
There are things buried in Tolkien work that are the reason why he deliberately made it to create an English mythology. People drawing off of elves to do things with the Vulcans.
Imo, every major group in Tolkien work is an archetypal representation of various aspects of the English. Hobbits are the ignorant, simple but innocent and decent Merry Old England types, the Roharrim are the Anglo-Saxons of barbarian days, Gordor is the noble and brave folks on the edge of the abyss which faced down the Armada, Napoleon and the Blitz, the Ents are the slow, deliberate andnintense when unleashed fury of the English Kipling described in his poem "The Beginnings" while Elves are the ancient and mournful long memory of the Enflish weighed down by centuries of tragedy and regret that climaxed in WWI.

When they stop BEING elves, but in space.
Re: When will Vulcans stop acting like Evles?!
When they stop being Bene Gesserit? It's not that the Jedi are acting like Vulcans, it's that Jedi and Vulcans are both based on the same thing.
It's funny watching as Dune's prominence has faded how the Vulcans have started gaining non-Bene Gesserit characteristics that are really all drawn from Elves. It's sad. The Bene Gesserit would really have been much better for them, it fits perfectly as a group of meddlesome individuals that claim to tell truth, but have endless ulterior motive.
Then again I think they want the Vulcans to be heroic, and the Bene Gesserit are by nature incapable of assuming a role as anything better than anti-heroes - the Prequel Trilogy bumped into this very hard, as soon as you got the Jedi Council up there and they started acting like Bene Gesserit everyone was like "wait, these are supposed to be the good guys? They're the worst!"

I think it's more accurate to say Jackson's Elves acted like Vulcans. Tolkien's Elves were not like any take on the Vulcans and your using them as an analogy for the modern badly written racist Vulcans I find highly insulting.

I personally think it comes down to the performance of the actor, both Leonard Nimoy's and Tim Russ's portrayal of a Vulcan are fantastic, able to be incredibly reserved without being devoid of emotion, to speak wisdom without sounding smug, and even both being snarky at times, for lack of a better description they both bring a warmth to their characters.
It's a delicate balancing act being able to play a Vulcan that both Leonard Nimoy and Tim Russ did incredibly well, while for me personally, many other portrayals of Vulcans mostly in Star Trek Enterprises first and second season failed at.

And I wouldn't describe either of them as being like elves either (pointy ears thing aside). But playing a Vulcan is hard, to find that line, so it's no surprise few actors have pulled it off well (we're probably lucky that we managed to get two series with well-acted Vulcans as main cast members). Both Spock and Tuvok feel like there's just a little hint of mischievousness under the surface; neither are robots.Link8909 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 6:41 pm I personally think it comes down to the performance of the actor, both Leonard Nimoy's and Tim Russ's portrayal of a Vulcan are fantastic, able to be incredibly reserved without being devoid of emotion, to speak wisdom without sounding smug, and even both being snarky at times, for lack of a better description they both bring a warmth to their characters.

Indeed, something as well I failed to mention is that Spock is also very inquisitive, with his famous line "fascinating" coming from discovering something unexpected, it helps the character from being a complete "know-it-all" and intern, not smug.Riedquat wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 11:51 am And I wouldn't describe either of them as being like elves either (pointy ears thing aside).
