Oh good. So they can make a partnership with a movie theater chain, only allow that chain to show Disney Movies if it has a theater in that city, and turn it into a Disney-approved theater. Most likely they'll start by letting a chain pay to get a movie a week early. Imagine if Regal had the latest Avengers movie a week before anyone else did.

This is the death of any small independent movie theaters, of course.

Partnership? No, they can straight up OWN CINEMAS now. They can BUY Regal!

Oh sure. But this is Disney. They're the most hyper conservative corporation ever. Expect them to test the waters with a partnership first. We can't even be sure movie theaters will survive, they aren't going to double down immediately. Then the people who support Trump will be like "oh look it's been a few years and the worst that has happened is these small handful of things, pwned libtards."

When Disney actually does buy out the movie theaters in 15 years or so they'll just blame the inevitable march of progress or go "oh god Trump is old news." Disastrous results of their incredibly stupid policies are always "old news" or "unavoidable" even though small children could see how incredibly stupid they are.

Honestly in the grand scheme of things I don't give a flying fuck about this, but it is typical of their idiocy. It's going to push independent movies to YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, etc., but they were already going there anyway. Hollywood blockbusters will continue their policy of milquetoast limosine liberalism, whitewashing the shit out of history, and generally being propaganda tools for the US government, and no one will care, as usual.

To be fair, with the rise of the multiplex cinema, I don't think that any studio has enough output to fill a theatre with a large enough schedule of films.

With only NEW films, maybe. Disney (our running hypothetical example) could just reissue older stuff to fill the remaining screens, especially with the Fox catalog now at their disposal.

No one I know goes to the theatre to see old movies. There's a 6-8 screen multiplex (don't remember) within a 10 minute drive from where I live. Been a while since I went (think it was TLJ). Practically any movie I want to see is there. Sometimes I go fancier for IMAX. If the (what, 3-5?) studios that release movies that ought to be seen in theatres all had their own theatre, that suddenly vanishes. T'would be a foolish money pit.

Is this a not-yet-empty bottle I see before me?

I wonder if it really matters. Theaters seem to have been going downhill for a long time, and maybe this will help them survive a little longer through vertical integration.

Disney is so SJW right now that I'm not all that interested in them. If my wife wants to see a movie I'll go without complaint (she's done similarly, telling me afterwords that she somehow missed the point of watching someone fight crime while dressed as a giant bat), but she seems done with Disney and hasn't really wanted to see a movie in a long time, aside from horror movies and Aquaman.

The latter of which I can only presume came from his ability to talk to fish and had nothing to do with Jason Momoa shirtless. :D
