The Legend of Korra Series Thread (Spoilers Allowed)
Re: The Legend of Korra Series Thread (Spoilers Allowed)
I do wonder, if Korra had been planned from the start what would have changed in the show proper. Which character would have stayed who would have gone. Would Vaatu be the big bad of the series or would they have given us a villain who was more in line with Korra's other adversaries, a well intentioned extremist who does have a good argument? Would Korra and Asami have ever met and would they still have ended up together? Would Mako and Bolin still be around or would they have been removed or combined into a single character or would we have gotten completely different character/s to fill there roles, ones that would have had more to do in the story besides being the love interest and the comic relief? What would Korra's character arc be, more of the same or something that fit with the kind of adversary she was facing?

unlock is a better villain than ozai as he was atleast involved in the plot
Re: The Legend of Korra Series Thread (Spoilers Allowed)
I really can't agree, while Unalaq does get more involved in the plot that only results in him screwing everything up while he says that everything is going according to plan as he alienates the one person who could actually help him. One of the dumbest moments of the series goes to Unalaq as he tells Korra that he doesn't need her to open the portal at the Northern Water Tribe because he thought that's what Korra needed to be told to get her under his control. I mean, WHAT?! That's not even a, "That sounded better in my head." as I can't picture how anyone would consider that a good idea in their head or out loud.aceina wrote:unlock is a better villain than ozai as he was atleast involved in the plot

I had really wished Nick had given the creators more freedom to do what they wanted instead of forcing a quick ending for season 1, then allowing another season, then saying it's ok for 2 more additional one with a forced recap to save money.
Korra's self discovery at the beginning of season 4 would have been perfect as a jump off point from season 1 and if she had still lost alll her bending save for Air. Get her on a journey of spiritual discovery and perhaps a plot to relearn all her powers all over again starting with Toph, getting in tune with the spirit world.
There's also so much of the world that could have been explored as it modernized. How people started to view the Avatar as we would view a superhero instead of this religious figure and how that would evolve her role.

All it would have taken to do this was snip off the last minute of season 1, right before the Aang-Ex-Machina, and put in a "To Be Continued" in its place, once they learned a second season was green lit (if I remember correctly, they found out while season 1 was still airing). I'm sure there was some studio rule preventing this sort of last minute change, but I wish they could have done it to continue the story instead of starting over for season 2.excalibur wrote:I had really wished Nick had given the creators more freedom to do what they wanted instead of forcing a quick ending for season 1, then allowing another season, then saying it's ok for 2 more additional one with a forced recap to save money.

I really believe that scene where the powerless Korra was standing over the cliff edge, wanting to be alone and staring down at the water below her. I had the dark impression of suicide being an option for her since in her mind, being the Avatar is her entire identity and without 3/4 of her powers, she would feel useless. It wouldn't surprise me if she had those thoughts considering how emotional she is throughout the show.

I love that suicide contemplation idea. She could even be thinking "Hey, the next Avatar will do better, and I just get reborn so really, it doesn't count as self-slaughter. It's more like an improvement."

ya know korra just had a crap life all around
Re: The Legend of Korra Series Thread (Spoilers Allowed)
As did Asami, in fact given everything that happened over the series she is the only one who suffered as much as Korra. Ignoring everything before the series started, her father turns out to be evil, she loses everything she has by choosing to do the right thing. Her boyfriend starts making the moves on someone else when she needs him most, she learns that he kissed said girl when he was in a relationship with her. And she's nearly killed by her father who she is forced to arrest. And this is just what happens in season 1 I'm not even going to go over everything that happens for the rest of the series cause we would be here all day.aceina wrote:ya know korra just had a crap life all around
But what makes this so well done is that throughout the series these events aren't just ignored and tossed to the side for either Asami or Korra, instead the writers used it to help further their characters. We see how the events of Air have effected Asami, both personally and financially throughout the rest of the series. Her father's down fall is something that is always brought up and we see the effects it has on Asami, like her not wanting to see Mako in prison because it reminds her of her father being in jail.
Take this in contrast with Mako, his parents being killed right in front of him, by a firebender, when he was a kid is mentioned once during the first season and only effects him in all of one episode, the one where he and Bolin meet the rest of their family and has little to no impact on the plot other then him and Bolin learning something that Korra had already figured out.
Asami's mother being killed is actually relevant not only to the plot but to her character as it serves as the catalyst for her father's fall to the dark side and why them falling apart and later rebuilding their relationship is so important. Mako and Bolin have each other and later they find the rest of their family, Tenzin has his wife and children, Lin has her own family and Korra has her parents. But Asami only had her father and later lost him to and as far as we can see she has no other family members.
This is why I can't wait to see Chuck review more of Korra and her relationship with Asami as well as Asami's character. Just take a look at The Sting, a episode that was, in theory, meant to show off how awesome Mako was but as Chuck pointed out, Asami was the one who came out looking better given her class and badass driving skills.
