Yeah, a YouTuber I watch calls it the 'Social Barometer'. If the megacorp accounting departments think supporting YOUR cause is the most profitable course of action, you're cause is probably winning out.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 5:25 am Disney does, has, and probably always will only do the safest, non-threatening, middle-of-the-road thing. Is Disney finally ditching WOKE politics?

TL;DW: Disney has pretty much been a vacation/atractions company with a film division for a WHILE now. Said film division only accounts for SIXTEEN PERCENT of their annual income.
All the jokes about Marvel Comics only being kept around as an R&D team for the MCU? Yeah, about that...
THAT is why the Mouse House is in trouble, their MAIN source of revenue has been blocked by the Pandemic.

In an interview after the series ended She-Ra show runner Noelle Stevenson said that they were asked to tone back the gayness of the series because Trump had won and they thought that was a paradigm shift with a new rising right, which subsequently failed to emerge and then saw a huge defeat in 2018 leading to season 5 getting to use text rather than just subtext.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 1:38 pmYeah, a YouTuber I watch calls it the 'Social Barometer'. Amen. I can't help but think this is an exercise to shift the Overton window, I don't think there's really too many people stupid enough to believe that Disney is displaying some sort of radical left-wing agenda in their movies.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 5:25 am Disney does, has, and probably always will only do the safest, non-threatening, middle-of-the-road thing. Whether they are or not is less relevant than how many people believe that there is. Every person who stops watching Disney because of this make-believe agenda is still one less customer that is watching Disney. A handful of less customers is not going to matter of course, but half a fanbase? It would be an lie to say that Star Wars in particular has not been divided and a delusion to say that at least someone at Disney doesn't know this.GreyICE wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 4:24 pmAmen. Oh they know it. It's pretty apparent that sexists and racists are a large section of the movie-going populace, and very willing to be vocal about it. From their overseas marketing they heavily downplayed their black character in the first movie, and I hear his role was dramatically reduced for the second and third movie. I'm sure they'll switch back to having white men as protagonists in action movies, with only very occasional exceptions, and be very sure never to make an exception with flagship movies in a franchise.clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 6:23 pmWhether they are or not is less relevant than how many people believe that there is. Yeah, for some folks, having people of color in major roles, women in leading roles, or noncisallohet people in ANY role IS 'displaying some sort of radical left-wing agenda'. Now look at Disney's biggest earners in the last decade... Yeah...clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 6:23 pmWhether they are or not is less relevant than how many people believe that there is. Yes, because they haven't made shit tons of money that have already repaid their massive debt for buying it.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 8:08 pmWhether they are or not is less relevant than how many people believe that there is. And are there actually morons who think the reason that Nu Star Wars is controversial is because it has a black man and a woman in the main trio (which is only different because the black man and woman were in the main QUARTET in the OT) versus being badly written?
I mean, surely no one is that fucking stupid?

It really depends on if the woke sauce is too much for the tent pole. That's really all that matters as far as buildings burning down etc. It's uncertain where Phase 4 is going. It's also probable that we'll see more progressive branching out with Marvel. Marvel is making far too competent of movies though to just sink with by the whim of a progressive anchor on its boat. It's very plausible that Phase 4 will just not be as exciting as Avengers was.
Star Wars just needs a good movie saga. Maybe they'll do it, maybe they won't. The majority of the ticket sales though aren't from anti-sjw fanboys.

..What mirror universe?
Re: Is Disney finally ditching WOKE politics?
We really don't know what or how Phase 4 will do since basically all we got post Endgame is Spiderman and it's teasing of Secret Wars.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sat Aug 29, 2020 2:03 am It really depends on if the woke sauce is too much for the tent pole. Will it introduce more progressive stuff in their movies? Probably. How much? Who knows. Will it affect the story or the whole movie? Probably, maybe at least one whole movie might be about it. Take your pick, Captain Marvel 2 or Black Panther as obvious choices.
If the rumors are true, I think the only one that would really stick is having the makers of the movie, whether it's actors, producers, directors, or whoever stay away from insulting anyone. Probably will not stop making some progressive ideas or concepts or storylines.
I got nothing to say here.
