Star Trek changing direction

Post by Zargon »

So....the rumor is with all the shake ups at CBS and company that most of the Star Trek shows are cancelled. Except for the Pike Enterprise To Boldly Go. Season three will be Discovery's last. No Section 31 show. No more Lower Decks.

Rumor is the new folks in charge don't like all the "new" stuff and want to put a stop to it and make some Star Trek shows a bit more true to the concept.

Thoughts?

I think that getting a new show off the ground is more expensive than people on the internet think. Especially for science fiction. You sunk millions into CGI, sets, costumes, etc. That doesn't just transfer to some other show.

Discovery has probably been on the bubble of being cancelled for a while, and the Pike show and Section 31 were already hypothetical. Lower Decks... don't see it being cancelled.

I've seen the "cancel everything the old producers did!" shit, and it was from Fox, and eventually people stopped bringing new shows to Fox, and oh yeah they cancelled Family Guy in that mess (And Arrested Development, and Firefly, and quite a few other good shows) and they know they were lucky to get Family Guy back (I'm convinced half the reason Seth got the Orville is because of the 'we owe you' coupon they handed him when he returned).

Also, quite frankly, if they started airing TNG tomorrow, it would sink like a stone. There's too much in it that was janky, bad, and not really meant to survive the scrutiny of the internet age, the effects of binge-watching, and the nature of TV in 2020. When you're binge watching, many issues are going to come to light very quickly about how the Enterprise functions (or doesn't) - the lack of real defined crew assignments, the ridiculousness of their computer security, how weirdly the Enterprise seems to shift missions at whim (they frequently have specialist scientists on board... who all apparently pack their bags and just vanish inbetween episodes)

Yes, none of this is true. CBS All-Access is apparently watched exclusively for Star Trek, Love Island, and The Good Fight. The reason they want five Star Trek shows is that as expensive and controversial as they are, people are watching them and paying to do it.

How much of a success is DISCOVERY?

They're now showing it on CBS during the pandemic. Which means it's the first Star Trek television show on regular television since DS9. It also means that DISCO has effectively managed to redeem its budget completely by being a show that they can slide into empty timeslots.

So, for all intents and purposes, this is a picture of Alex Kurtzman.

I should note that it occurs to me some random guy on the internet is not necessarily going to be believed about how much Star Trek is rocking CBS' world when the fanboys desperately want it to be banished to the netherworld.

So I'll share some news to help make it clear everyone loves Kurtzman.

Just going on Google search news for Star Trek and I noticed Alex Kurtzman and other producers and actors do a lot of interviews talking about the future of Star Trek, and simply going by that it looks like Star Trek has a long future ahead.

I don't really know why these rumours are even humoured here, we're all smart enough to know that they have no real evidence to back them up, that their "reliable source" is their assholes which they pull these rumours from, and that really they are just wish fulfilment from very salty douche canoes who make money off of peoples uncertainty by spreading these lies.

Agreed - it all comes down to cost. And a cartoon ultimately is cheaper than live-action. A large portion of the Star Trek fanbase is not watching STD and PIC and I can tell you that by the comments under some hefty hundred-thousand sub Youtube channels and that is a big problem when it comes to overheads.

My honest opinion is that Star Trek has become The Walking Dead of sci-fi. A show that was past its sell by date the moment that Negan killed Glen and yet that was four/five seasons ago. I no longer watch it despite being a die-hard fan of it once upon time, I know no one who has a good word to say about it, and yet pre-Covid they were still making it. I am going to presume it still makes enough money to warrant it coming back, but that is NOT the same thing as being a success.
I find that is a problem with many American shows - the network just does not want to stop it and thus it continues until everyone hates it. Compare to British TV shows where any show that has two seasons of 6 episodes each is considered a hit. The British version of The Office is a great comparison between the two.

Just pointing out, again, Star Trek: Discovery is one of the most successful streaming series of all time.

https://screenrant.com/star-trek-discovery-ratings-most-popular-streaming-show/

According to Parrot Analytics, a data analytics firm who measure demand for TV shows across the globe, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 was a measurable hit. Between April 6 and May 5 - the season 2 finale, "Such Sweet Sorrow", released on April 18 - Star Trek: Discovery was the most in-demand digital original series worldwide. Further, it was the #2 science-fiction series worldwide, narrowly beaten by The 100.

Star Trek: Discovery
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Cobra Kai
The Grand Tour
Doom Patrol
Narcos
Stranger Things
The Umbrella Academy
The Handmaid's Tale
The Act

To underscore, It is more popular than Stranger Things.

Are people so invested in Youtube "Disco sucks!" that they really have missed that CBS ordering a half-dozen new Trek shows is a sign of huge success?

That does actually serve against clearspira's sentiments, but doesn't Parrot Analytics just read social media reactions to determine viewership strength?

Pretty much, rather than acknowledging such things like trusted news sources or interviews from people who's day job is working on these series, you know... facts, or that there are people that do enjoy the series for what it is and that if you didn't like something then that is your own personally opinion and should respect that, the mentality of these people is that if they hated it everyone else should also hate it and will do everything they can to force people to think the same way, and this includes preying on people who don't like these series or are uncertain or are just looking for more information, and feed them essentially propaganda that everything is going wrong behind the scenes, after all why would someone question that the series they hate is not doing well or the person they hate is being fired for the 10th time this year.

I do see your point, and I think this was an issue back when Voyager was ending and Enterprise was starting, however I think it's still far to early to write off the current Star Trek series, Discovery currently has 29 episodes, Picard has 10, and Lower Deck and Strange New Worlds will also have 10, so if we were to compare to just one finished Star Trek series, combined that basically means we're up to Season 3 of The Next Generation, and I don't need to remind anyone on how much of a rocky start that had with its first 2 seasons.

And I agree with GreyICE that if The Next Generation was airing today with the current Internet culture, it would be Destroyed!
