I'm only familiar with 2 original movies being planned concurrently from each other. Back to the Future 2/3, Matrix 2/3, Kill Bill 1/2.
..What mirror universe?

Make them fierce, crack shots with access to the most up-to-date military hardware and the training to use it. Have them drop Flashbangs while Rey is doing her cool acrobatics; have them pull shock batons when some fool tries to jump them up close. Then transfer that badassery to Finn: sure, Rey has the force, and that's good for her but make Finn a straight-up better fighter and tactician so that he has his chance to shine, while she can still get plenty of screentime with that lightsaber stuff we all know and love. In Dungeons and Dragons terms, sometimes you need a Fireball, but sometimes you need 2d8+24 points of slashing damage in just the right spot. The wizard can do one, and the fighter can do the other, and they can both look cool doing it without detracting from the other.
VII was an an opportunity to kind of grow The Force again, and show that there can be more than one type of force user. Like, Rey, Finn, *and* Poe each found themselves interacting with The Force in different ways.

To use continue the D&D analogy, perhaps Finn should have been something like a Paladin, with some minor Force abilities that supplement primary physical fighting ability. And maybe it takes a while for everyone to figure out what's going on - since it's just Rey that has the traditional "Jedi" stack that Luke and Leia recognize, Finn has some further challenges understanding 'lucky' shots and such throughout VIII and IX.

That plus something personally meaningful - say that in VIII he's also adjusting to being a Colonel or some kind of special operative in the Resistance, and then in IX he personally defeats or turns Captain Phasma - I think that might have been a far better arc than what was delivered.

That would be an interesting concept. To have three main characters Force sensitive to varying degrees and differently.

Make the whole Force Awakening about bringing Force sensitive people together or something.
I got nothing to say here.

I think it's reasonable to say, that any arc would be better than the non-existant arc that Finn got.
