I was hoping they'd just go back in time and prevent this nightmare future.
But its apparently permanent and that's BS.

Well look at this as a metaphor:Zatman wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 1:55 pm I guess my problem with a future show that shows the Federation destroyed is it suddenly makes everything we've seen and done, and are doing (Picard) seem almost pointless. What has happened since Donald Trump has taken campaign? He has systematically dismantled public safeguard institutions and emboldened a social pandemic of fascism through a brand of neoliberalism. The New Deal and the Democrats had been a pretty steady wave of progressive development to which Star Trek has factored into Starfleet's ideology.
Trump's brand of democracy reverts back to proto democracy where everybody is in the dark.
..What mirror universe?

I was able to watch it on Star Trek.com, so give that a try.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 4:45 am

Well, I'm clearly not wanted as a customer.

I get how you feel, I was ok with Star Trek Discovery being a prequel and really enjoyed the series despite the constant hatred lobbied at it, for me anyway I wasn't bothered by the new elements added in by Discovery and even genuinely enjoyed them, and there was enough justification for why we have never seen these before, Spock has always kept his personal family matters to himself, and the Spore Drive has so many variables to make it a viable means of propulsion that it simply couldn't be mass produced, and as you say I just liked we were seeing more of The Original Series era.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 1:56 pm I find it hilarious and infuriating that I have defended this gorram (thank you, Firefly) show since Day 1. I've advertised it on social media, defended it on forums, and gotten in the faces of the assholes online who hate it repeatedly. I've watched it several times and read the books plus buy the merch. What I love? That it is a fresh new take on the TOS era and the connection to the setting.
And they dump all of it to go to the goddamn future as a sop to the people who hate it. Fracking CBS.
And while I do like many of the elements of Season 2, to have the series jump away from that era and even spent that season justifying why Discovery was never mentioned because fans jimmies were rustled over things that didn't need that much explanation or weren't issues to begin with, well it feels like there's a lot of missed opportunity's we won't be able to get now.
However, a series of a starship from the 23rd century stranded in the 29th century, that's too good of an idea to not do something with, and the potential stories from not just seeing what becomes of many Star Trek races, but also the new races and advances in technology, and the fact that the Federation has collapsed is really interesting and I look forward to seeing how it plays out, plus we will still get a modern interpretation of the TOS era with Strange New Worlds which could pick up on those missed opportunity's.
So while I get it and agree, I'm mostly along for the ride and I'm happy that the series is continuing, and that it still has its characters which I think is Discovery's biggest strength.

I dunno, a thousand years is a weird time to think. I find the idea of a Federation lasting a 1000 years a bit terrifying.I guess my problem with a future show that shows the Federation destroyed is it suddenly makes everything we've seen and done, and are doing (Picard) seem almost pointless. Maybe pointless is too strong, but I can't think of a better word, but it definitely puts a damper on things.
Change is good.
Mind you, I never liked the idea the Federation would expand to include traditional enemies.
Re: Star Trek: Discovery - Season 3 Trailer
Honestly while I didn't mind Discovery as a Prequel, the unknown of this future as you said is really interesting and could go in any direction.GreyICE wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 3:55 pm Wow. Burman showing emotions. Something with real stakes, where I'm not sure if our heroes will succeed or more importantly HOW they'll succeed. Can I just take a moment to say how refreshing BOTH of those changes are? I'd love to see the actors off the very short leashes they were on in Seasons 1/2.
And as for the change, well, this is the first major plotline where I don't know how it ends:
Klingon War: Obviously ends with some sort of truce and cold war situation
Mirror Universe: Obviously Discovery makes it home
Evil AI: Is obviously defeated.
Rebuilding the Federation: ???
I don't know. It's not immediately obvious they'll succeed, and it's not immediately obvious they'll fail. There's probably people who'd like a Federation back, there's people who wouldn't. What will it look like? Obviously for it to be the Federation it has to be close to Rodenberry ideals, but that still gives us lots of wiggle room. Who is in it? I don't know. Andorians, their military power was core to the Federation and we saw a lot in the trailers, but Cardassians? Romulans? Klingons? Vulcans? All possible, none probable.
Humans, probably in some flavor because god it cuts down on makeup costs. Farscape has taught me that aliens are fucking expensive.
And while I do like Michael Burnham, I do agree that they piled on to many story lines on her from the start, so to have those resolved before this season starts gives her a fresh start, even with this new era of Discovery starting with them rebuilding the Federation, simply having her be proactive in this is very different from the previous seasons where it was all about her, and as you said I do like she's more expressive, I didn't mind the Vulcan mindset she had, but her looking like she's having the time of her life is just fun to watch.

Agreed, and I don't think knowing the fate of the Federation makes any other series for lack of a better term, meaningless, in-fact even though the organization is gone, going by the trailer the spirit of the Federation seems to still thrive, so this seems to be the most optimistic dystopian that I've seen.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 6:48 pmI dunno, a thousand years is a weird time to think. I think the Federation actually still exists. It's just like 7 races now. Presumably Andorians, Humans, Vulcans, Tellarites, and a handful of others.Link8909 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 7:05 pm Agreed, and I don't think knowing the fate of the Federation makes any other series for lack of a better term, meaningless, in-fact even though the organization is gone, going by the trailer the spirit of the Federation seems to still thrive, so this seems to be the most optimistic dystopian that I've seen.

That's like saying building a house isn't worth building because in hundreds of years it'll be destroyed by a hurricane. That's an extremely cynical and cold way to interpret things.Zatman wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 1:55 pm I guess my problem with a future show that shows the Federation destroyed is it suddenly makes everything we've seen and done, and are doing (Picard) seem almost pointless.
